Well, my sleepless night and worrying were not needed, as my dog performed like a little star. He was so good at the groomers and Steff, the groomer was a wonderful woman. She really knew how to handle an anxious dog. She just tucked him under her arm and walked about, talking and clipping his nails at the same time. Better than any vet and about a quarter of the price. I was so relieved. I tried to force more money on her, but she wouldn't take it. I gave her a big hug, she was so kind. I had another letter off the taxman this morning - that makes seven in three days! It is not my fault I owe them money. The pensions people made the mistake by underpaying me for 3 years and ten months. My daughter in law is coming to work it all out for me tomorrow, though I have worked it out myself, another pair of eyes won't hurt.

Are you saying that you were underpaid (state?) pension for 3 years and 10 months and then given the arrears in a lump sum resulting in a big tax bill for the year in which the arrears were paid? Just been for a walk along the sea front - it's insanely mild. Quite different from when we stopped at a nature reserve on the way here, where it was very sunny but distinctly chilly on account of a very cold wind. There has been some rain, but that must have been while we were using the hotel's leisure facilities. Got talking to massive muscular man in the jacuzzi who claimed to be England's strongest man. I had and have no reason to doubt the claim. And there was me, with scarcely the strength to peel a grape.

Morning all: A lot milder this morning, still on the antibiotics. I'll see how I am over the weekend. Not much better today anyway.

Staying put all weekend, If I'm no better next week I will contact the surgery. There does seem to be a few people down with a chest virus at the moment though. I haven't really been right since I had that RSV jab two weeks ago.

Hi Tick, my husband died in Jan 2021. It was the time of Covid still and so I suppose the lady who worked out my pension did not have all the documentation she needed to work my pension out. They were all working from home. So it's 3 years 10 months that they have underpaid me. They did send me a lump sum, but the taxman will take the lion's share, as they have demanded all the tax I would have paid over the 3 years. I didn't make the mistake, but they are treating me like a tax avoider. I have had 7 letters from the Tax office in three days. Everyone giving me a different tax code. On Monday I shall all my ducks in a row and ring them with a few questions, then I'll pay the lot at once, before I get used to having it. Leo has been very sick and I've been up half the night with him. He is slowly coming back to himself. He must have eaten something nasty while out on a walk.

You could of course offer to pay them back over the equivalent period of three years, however I would be asking if as it was their mistake they will give you a settlement figure of say 25% less that you will pay immediately. You would probably win this case if you had thousands for the court case.

If you still had unused tax allowance for those 3 years(plus any months pro rata in a 4th year) Hilde, you should be able to apply it to the sum you have received. My tax allowance more than covers my State Pension and reduces my tax liability for my residual pension for my late husband's scheme. You could do a calculation yourself or look at the tax demand letters you have received to see if any of them have allowed it. Maybe the Financial department of the Citizen's Advice Bureau can sort it out for you. But it probably wouldn't hurt to ask. Take each year separately and check your tax code letters for each period to make sure you used all your tax allowance. The lump sum letter should say how much was payable for each year. Winter fuel payment and any attendance allowance aren't taxable and can safely be ignored.
I'm just going to get changed and go back to town where I am singing in the Choral Society's Autumn concert. Last year I missed the concert when I pranged the car on the way to the afternoon rehearsal, then had to miss the Spring one because I had pharyngitis and had lost my voice.

Hi all, been to hospital again, catheter infected, after 4 hours I got to see a lady doctor who messed around with sports box after I walked into her consultation room , I left bow legged with a prescription for anti biotics.

It's getting to that time when we're smothered in lard and sewn into our vests.
