"How 'Brexit' Was Sold to the Masses The scapegoat handed to them by the Eurosceptics is the immigrant. One only has to look at how nationalist fervour and economic strife following the Great Depression played out in 1930s Germany to see how close we are sailing to the wind." We are back to the days of racial abuse. If you see it...report it to the police. It will only proliferate if we allow it to. Racism is sort of insidious, stuff you could not really report For instance, yesterday I bought a punnet of strawberries from my local fruit and veg shop. Having seen a TV documentary about strawberries being picked by mainly Bulgarians (this fascinated me, wondering what was in the Bulgarian make up to make them strawberry pickers), I asked the assistant if the ones I bought had been Bulgarian picked "Don't think so, she replied - they have all gone or are going, thank goodness". So I asked the obvious question as to who would be picking them now to which she had no answer. Local labour not interested I pointed out that as nearly everything in her shop was picked by E Europeans, there would be nothing for her to sell and she would be out of work. She looked at me as if I had made an obscene suggestion

Insidious? True Gus to a point but I doubt that lady selling strawberries is going to daub any Bulgarian centres/homes. However, the strawberry pickers could come and work when the farmer/producer needed them to if movement rules change. I think we would see a lot of seasonal/demand jobs. There is a problem which concerns benefits, which for many, pays better than low paid jobs which is why indigenous folk won't take them. Along comes a hardworking Bulgarian who says "I'll do it" If benefits had not become so generous, you might find a lot more strawberry pickers!

We all know that benefits are "so generous" and are widely abused yet nobody is prepared to do anything about it. Even when the subject of tackling the welfare bill was put to Mrs Thatcher, she vetoed it claiming it would be "Political suicide" Strange how they manage in Europe where benefits are only paid for a short period, then it's work or starve. I knew a young woman who was sweeping the streets, she had an excellent degree but could not find work to match her qualifications so it was sweep or starve I had a discussion elsewhere about disability benefits where a man had lost the tip of a finger and was refused disability benefit. Others seemed to think he was hard done by I have many physical things wrong with me, and have been advised to get a blue badge for the car. I have declined because I do not want to start thinking that I am disabled, I force myself to go on

The Tories have tried to do something about it but all it amounted to was a rehash and Universal Credit instead of a range of benefits. It was also all about "the bill" ( which is enormous) and that seemed punitive and people were up in arms. The reality is that there is no incentive to work because in many instances, benefits pay more, especially if you are exempt from other costs like council tax. It's gone on for so long, I don't even have a suggestion of how to address it.
Your pride Gus, is something that is part of a totally different outlook and many in the other one would say you were mad!

Well said Gus. I think my standpoint is simple. I am all for helping people who are unable to help themselves, but I am damned if I will help those who won't help themselves. Nothing upsets me more that people on benefits first of all moaning about how hard done by they are and second seemingly having a better lifestyle than those who are working.
No-one wants to see people starve, but the pendulum has swung well the other way. How we get back to a degree of sanity on the benefits system is I think beyond anything other than a dictatorship.

Well, Stelios could consider moving his operations to Greece who probably need his business and taxes far more than we do!

Well, Stelios could consider moving his operations to Greece who probably need his business and taxes far more than we do! I bet that apart from Greece their are plenty of EU countries that would offer attractive terms to relocate for the employment it would bring, Spain for one. Must be worrying for all EasyJet's Luton employees

I was being a bit flippant.. you're right. Jobs could go at Stansted and Gatwick too - this is the real and painful result of Brexit
