I used to buy smoked bacon knuckles from a local proper grocers shop and simmer them with onions on my woodburner. Take the skin off and all the meat, chop the meat up then add yellow split peas and maybe some garlic and bung it back on the stove. Winter heaven in a bowl for about fourpence. I am now thinking I might do that again........ Sounds tasty!

^^^ Was that a quote from Searle??? Pease pudding... yes, I'm quite happy to open a tin for us but if the mother comes, it has to be the soaked-from-dried faff. She won't eat it otherwise. Basically, it's yellow split peas, cooked and then mashed - which is how you find it when you open the tin. If you like pulses, I would guess you'd like it. Just heat (microwave best) and mash again with a bit of butter on top. It's a dryish texture though.. but have to say, goes very well with carrots and SPROUTS! 😀 Still a regular everyday item up here in the North East. Lovely with ham, hot or cold, lovely anyway. Sainsbury's had a recipe for Ham Hock and Pease Pudding that had tiny bits of chopped carrot in it and that was good. I wrote to M&S last year to tell them their recipe (British Cookery Book) was wrong because they used green peas. I pointed out that what they had made were mushy peas, or rather the fashionable 'crushed peas' and they had used garden peas which don't mash well at all. I didn't get a reply..........it was one of those ranty days when I felt the need to let someone know!! Still the recipe was wrong in it's title, if the recipe said "Slightly battered garden peas" it would have been fine.

Think of it as an English hummus, you can flavour it with garlic, red pesto, chives anything you want.
