More cooking Q's... Is there an item you eat where own-brand/value just won't do? You HAVE to have the label?

Today - just ran out of time to prepare/cook just for us, so took a trip to my corner shop (Waitrose) to pick out something to slam in the oven. Came out with their lasagne from chill cabinet 😕 - didn't rate it much at all....not enough pasta and too much sauce. What do you turn to when pressed like this? Any recommendations?

I was taught that it was essential to wash all fruit, vegetables and salad, and I still do. I use my salad spinner (sad or what?) But recent reports about nasty illness caused by people eating salad stuff vindicate my mother's advice/instruction! It was quite scary to read about the reasons why bagged salad is "flushed" with a disinfectant gas (you so don't want to know what microbes/bacteria were detected!). So I continue to follow mother's instructions, and live to tell the tale. With regard to "shortcuts" when pressed for time: the cook-in sauces are pretty good for the occasional short-cut. Failing which, I cook on the basis of "Cook one, freeze one" so I always have a stock of ready meals in the freezer. Cheaper than bought stuff. No funny additives/preservatives either.

Ha ha.. I've got a number of frozen portions of anonymous stuff in my freezer. I recall a while ago, one night I made a chicken curry and the following day, I took one of my frozen dishes out to thaw. Said to my OH, guess whast we've got for dinner tonight? Chicken curry!

Now the three sons have gone I find my halogen oven a boon. It's ideal for two and dead cheap to run. I've seen these and they look a bit scarey! Why are they good, and what cooks well in them ?

As Gus will testify, I am becoming quite a fan of Iceland - the shop that is... One of my favourite Italian dishes is Spaghetti alle Vongole and I saw they had this in their gourmet section for £3 !!!! Well, that's not such a lot for a wager, is it, so I gave it a go. Put your pasta on then while that's boiling, put the whole frozen block in a covered pan on a high flame and within five minutes, all the clams have opened and a delicious aroma fills the kitchen. Now don't get me wrong, it's not of the standard you might get on the Italian coast, for £3 it's brilliant and definitely worth a punt. A meal for two in about 15 minutes? You can't go wrong!

Somewhere at the back of my cupboard there is a salad spinner...an outmoded item if ever there was one... Did a little poll amongst friends to see who ate salad (all) and who washed salad (1) and this person didn't even have a spinner but washed the salad and then patted dry with kitchen roll...what a FAFF!! Do you go to this performance or do you run the e-coli gauntlet and use bags of salad? One of the ways to contaminate your food is to wash it with tap water. If you look on many meat wrappers now, they state this. We never wash fruit or veg and do not peel potatoes ,carrots or fruit. As you can see on my avatar, neither of us is ill.

You would have wanted to wash my veg I had for supper yesterday. Celery out of the garden with a liberal coating of mud which went in a chicken casserole, and black Italian kale which I thought best washed to get rid of the slugs.
But in general I agree, an awful lot of fruit and veg is scrubbed peeled and washed to the point of it being tasteless.
