In this age of so many different appliances for cooking, what's your favourite.
I use my pressure cooker a lot.

In this age of so many different appliances for cooking, what's your favourite. I use my pressure cooker a lot. Slow cooked casseroles in the oven, or pan fried Don't make the mistake, as I did of thinking when you look at the slow cooker 'there is a handy large casserole dish, I will put it in the oven' The knob melts! Now why on earth should the manufacturers not spend all of an extra two pence on making the knob out of a thermo-setting plastic and not a thermo-plastic plastic is beyond me. It is sat on a desk here waiting the time to fit a new, and heatproof knob. Most useful gadget? Well apart from the lever operated corkscrew, I guess it would be my stick blender.

Now the three sons have gone I find my halogen oven a boon. It's ideal for two and dead cheap to run.

What's the difference between a slow-cooker and a crock?

What's the difference between a slow-cooker and a crock? A slow cooker is an electrically heated casserole type thing which never gets to high temperature, mainly used for stews etc. A crock is what I drive.

Pressure cookers always frightened me. I worked with a chap some years ago and just before Christmas his wife was taken ill. Not a problem, he and his daughter would take over the pre-Christmas preparations. The insurance man called at the door and behind my friend was a huge explosion, and the ham he had been pressure cooking rolled out of the front door. The ham had risen in the pressure cooker and blocked both the vent and safety valve. The plate rack on the top of the cooker was twisted and bucked. By a fluke n-one was killed. His wife made a very quick recovery.

I used to love my pressure cooker but when we bought a new cooker with an induction hob last year I discovered that the PC was unuseable because it is aluminium. Really missed it at Christmas. I did think about grabbing the little gas ring from the beach hut but I think it would have taken an age to get up to pressure!

I did think about grabbing the little gas ring from the beach hut but I think it would have taken an age to get up to pressure! Introduce a steel plate between the cooker and the aluminium pot. Not very efficient but it works. When I changed my cooker about 3 years ago I was tempted to go for Induction but thought of my wonderful collection of pots that I would no longer be able to use, so went for a standard model. No regrets.

I love my induction hob. I am one who loves kitchen gadgets. I think I have most of the gadgets on the market. I boil my ham in my slow cooker. I also like stews and soups, but my OH prefers everything separate. I am afraid of pressure cookers, though I did have one once. MY OH used to have to sort it out for me. When I was a girl,my mother was making pea soup in the pressure cooker. She wandered away from the stove and the pressure cooker blew. The weight came off the top and pea soup shot up and covered the ceiling. I wasn't near it at the time, but it made a lasting impression.

Somewhere at the back of my cupboard there is a salad spinner...an outmoded item if ever there was one... Did a little poll amongst friends to see who ate salad (all) and who washed salad (1) and this person didn't even have a spinner but washed the salad and then patted dry with kitchen roll...what a FAFF!! Do you go to this performance or do you run the e-coli gauntlet and use bags of salad?
