I am seriously looking forward to the return of Parliament next week. It's about time Starmer had some challenge.
The endless, and boring Tory-blame speeches are getting more than a little tedious culminating in yesterday's Rose Garden standing behind that 'meaningless slogan' lectern. I wonder how long he can keep doing this? For the whole term I suspect 🫤 Starmer has said little to inspire so far.
In fact, I can't make out some of his moves - eg acting as if the 'black hole' was some sort of shock surprise 😧 Impossible. Or if that truly was the case, what in earth were they doing in opposition?? Asleep? Then further increasing said hole with massive public sector pay increases - with no demands on the recipients. Then the prison places crisis - another Tory failure natch, which is actually fair comment - but then he swiftly sends hundreds of people to prison, many for some off-colour tweet or Facebook comment while serious criminals avoid sentences. Makes no sense and smacks of poor judgement. Mind you, he was DPP once and not even that good.

How can a party of opposition do much about anything when they will always be outvoted. Even all the opposition parties combined would have had to rely on Tory MPs voting against the govt to change anything.
They have said there will be no rise in Income Tax, no rise in VAT etc. That's all they promised.
Today they were meeting with energy companies to see what could be done about protecting pensioners within £5,000 of Pensioners Credit and poor families with children. Rather than an extra business tax they are asking the companies to come up with some kind of grant scheme.
They hope to announce this soon.
I don't have a problem with public sector employees getting what the Pay Commission said was a fair pay rise, we can't keep losing teachers, nurses and doctors.
They have already started deporting foreign criminals and rounding up illegal immigrants. They have started to extend the processing centres to hold them before deportation.
You say that people have been sent to prison off colour remarks online, but there is no evidence for this, people have bern convicted of inciting violence and violent threats.
Starmer has ruled out free movement for under 30s, because people can go around Europe for up to 3 months anyway. He does not want for instance 10,000 Portuguese coming here when they're 19 and staying until they are 29, hoping to get permission to stay. He only wants them to come if they qualify for a work visa.
They've actually done quite a bit considering parliament is in recess.

Oh Hildie there was. Quite a few of those given sentences posted online what they admitted were stupid things said in the heat of the moment. Imo, definitely deserving of a rap over the knuckles - but prison? Come on.. It was a knee jerk reaction from him and ill thought out. Not only because of prison overcrowding but now every crime should rightly be seen in this context - why hang about? Haul em in and bang em up...but that's no longer happening of course.
Free movement no - because that's a whole EU policy and we're not in it. But a deal could be done under guidelines with a specific country, in this case Germany. Starmer wanted a second referendum I recall so all this 'closer ties' stuff doesn't surprise me. Anyway - one, I'd reckon there'd be an outrage and second, most EU countries are in dire straits so maybe not 🤣 I'm all for deporting foreign criminals and considering the high numbers of foreign nationals currently in our jails it's very annoying that we are obliged to keep them at His Majesty's Pleasure.

Hi Hild, why wasn't the withdrawal of the cold weather payments in their manifesto, they obviously had this in mind, IMHO ?

Riki, they knew EXACTLY what they were about to do, but couldn't say that could they? That'd be shooting yourself in the foot 😁 Considering the polls, election for them was a done deal, the Tories were dead. so Labour's agenda had been in the planning for a long time. But they won't say that of course. It'll net about £1.4 billion a year which I daresay will go some way to making a dent in the £4billion a year we spend on accommodating asylum seekers.

You make a good point Hildie. With their massive majority, what can any opposition to Labour do? Outvoted every time from here on in...

I reckon with average death per annum here at around 600,000 OAP's Starmer is hoping millions of OAP's will have died in 5 years time?

Personally, I think he was looking forward to taking the payment from the wealthy Tory-voting elderly - not reckoning on the millions not on benefits, for whom it is disastrous. Come to that, by the time the next election comes, a lot of Tory voters will be dead...

France, Germany, Italy... all still in - what's the reason for their decline?

I'm not a smoker and never have been, but stopping people smoking outside is a step too far imo. Vaping is seen most often now but the majority I notice actually puffing away are smoking cannabis! That's everywhere...

France, Germany, Italy... all still in - what's the reason for their decline? According to my old paper , the FT , the EU economy is growing at .3% at the moment. Hardly a 100 billion loss.
