France, Germany, Italy... all still in - what's the reason for their decline? According to my old paper , the FT , the EU economy is growing at .3% at the moment. Hardly a 100 billion loss. The EU - That's collectively a large number of countries, not specific ones. I'm not saying that Brexit has delivered all, or indeed anything that was promised. I voted remain anyway... I'm merely saying that a lot of those within aren't faring well economically either - though for different reasons. The UK has some pressing problems but Brexit fallout is far from top of the list. If it was, Starmer would be calling for a second referendum to address it and if people genuinely thought Brexit was to blame for our woes, it'd be a shoo-in. But like I say, the grass doesn't appear any greener either...

I'm not a smoker and never have been, but stopping people smoking outside is a step too far imo. Vaping is seen most often now but the majority I notice actually puffing away are smoking cannabis! That's everywhere... Most of the pubs and restaurants have smoking areas, most of the pubs around here closed after they banned smoking inside , the pubs, not only will they close again with job loses and lack of revenue to the chancellor , for many here they are meeting dens, who is going to pay for the implications of policing this farcical endeavour. My local pub installed extractor fans in its ceilings, I couldn't smell their fag smoke from a few feet away.

What on earth is the point of it?

<I do hope the smoking outdoor ban doesn't happen; it will lead to yet more pub closures. What on earth is the point of it?> I think this is proof that Starmer is showing signs of becoming a dictator, percentages can be applied to everything, even our nation's citizens. www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/aug/29/starmer-faces-pushback-from-pubs-over-bonkers-outdoor-smoking-curbs?CMP=share_btn_urlnews.sky.com/story/starmer-attacked-for-petty-removal-of-thatcher-portrait-from-no-10-13205761Starmers next targets? [It is estimated that, in the UK, obesity – which increases risk of diabetes and cancer – costs the NHS £5.1 billion, smoking costs £3.3 billion, alcohol costs £3.5 billion and physical inactivity costs £0.9 billion.] [barbecue fumes can be toxic and pose a significant health hazard: Carcinogens: Barbecue smoke contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogenic and can be easily absorbed into the lungs. Ultrafine particles: Barbecue smoke contains ultrafine particles (UFPs) that can enter the bloodstream and affect every organ in the body, including the brain. Soot: Barbecue smoke from charcoal or wood produces soot, which can be inhaled deep into the lungs and contribute to respiratory illnesses. Carbon monoxide: Barbecue smoke can produce carbon monoxide (CO), which can be fatal and affect anyone, but is especially dangerous for children, older people, pregnant women, and people with heart or breathing problems. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Barbecue smoke contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs): Barbecue smoke contains semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Heterocyclic amines (HCAs): Barbecue smoke contains heterocyclic amines (HCAs).]

Who is the ban supposed to help? They say smoking related disease is a massive strain on the NHS. However, in the open, non smokers are at less than negligible risk from others smoking (and no risk at all from (more commonplace) vaping) If indeed it is the smokers themselves, then why not create an initiative to help smokers actually stop? This ban does nothing to address that.
This government seems bent on restricting personal freedom in a lot of ways.

Plastic debts , real money. Are mobile phones the cause of this huge debt mountain?
[Within the total, outstanding credit card debt came to £70.6 billion, an increase of 6.92% in the year to May 2024. Credit card debt averaged £2,487 per household and £1,316 per adult. A credit card on the average interest would take 26 years and 10 months to repay, making only the legal minimum repayments each month.]

The article admits that the season ticket will work out cheaper for those who use the car park every day (perhaps to have lunch or visit a day centre) and those eligible still have the option of buying a ticket when they need one, like everyone else. Am I the only one finding the mixing of different topics in one thread confusing? I would prefer a separate thread for each subject.

Hi skylark, the news changes virtually every day, that's why this thread is called news of the week.

Yes, but it isn’t one news story a week, is it? If I am a lone voice here just carry on!
