It needs looking at Rikki. If such eminent people are saying the medical and statistical evidence is suspect, she must be given the right to appeal. Several serious statisticians have said that part of the evidence is completely wrong and should never have been used. Especially as it did not cover all the baby deaths in the unit.

I'd think it was easier to stop reading The Express altogether. If you want to block pave half your front garden to get your three cars on it, then why shouldn't there be a flood risk fee. Why not insist on a storm drain or some kind of run off area into a pond or ensuring 30% is still soil. Otherwise a nominal £100/150. It isn't any different to wanting to build an extension and being told you can't install a window looking into your neighbours bedroom, these are just building regs. Alternatively put the grass back.
Personally I think councils should clamp down on people making illegal driveways into their homes and then trying to stop people parking in front of them

Grown up people who work in the same building, chatting and getting along with each other like adults. Dowden has obviously told Rayner something funny and she gets him to repeat it to Starmer, behind them Reeves and Hunt are chatting away. When Mhairi Black the SNP MP gave her leaving speech she joked that Oliver Dowden and her started at the same time and looking at the polls they would probably be leaving at the same time too. When she heard he had been re-elected she sent him a message (paraphrasing) Congratulations Ollie - you must have a big family - laughing emoji. This is what takes the hate out of politics and it needs to be shown much more. Yes, they are opposed to each others parties, of course they have differing views, but they are capable of being adults and talking to each other at work.

Also, why can't they agree/support the other party's policy/approach sometimes? " Good idea"

They are, Starmer is adopting some of the Tory proposed legislation and they are working with all parties on the Social Care Bill.
He said they didn't have to write new bills when some of the proposed legislation just needed finishing.

What do you think of the sentences handed down to the Just Stop Oil protesters. I found them staggering. I can only think it's a 'we're not having this' sort of response, sent as a warning to all motorway traffic halters or paint throwers. A rap over the back of the hand was doing nothing.

I think these people were considered to be the organisers of the whole thing. On top of that during the court case one of the men also got sentences for contempt, for trying to influence a jury etc. Altogether it is a combination of offence that have made up the total.
They are long sentences for disruptive but essentially non-violent crimes and I would think that we can be more imaginative here. The claim to be environmentalists, so why not have an approved work provider who can pick them up every Sat morning and take them somewhere to restore footpaths, dig drainage ditches, pick up litter, dredge streams, a kind of enforced environmental work for 4 years. What we have done here is make them appear at martyrs to their supporters and it is a mockery that someone can get 5 years for protesting, even disruptively protesting and a rapist can get less.
What this also does is make them lose their houses and jobs, putting their families (who may not even condone what they have done) in jeopardy and possibly homelessness, plus the need to claim benefits etc.
I think we should have some kind of open prison system for non-violent offenders. Yes, it might be tough turning up every Saturday ( I would allow six days leave and some leeway re sickness) for 5 years, to do shredding in an office, but it is better than 5 years in prison for fraud. I think in California once you have completed your community services and ticked every box in terms of education and training, you can apply to have the record remain confidential from then on. The court has to agreed and it's not expunged, but can only be looked at if you are arrested again and only used if the crime is similar e.g. fraud. There was a lot of discussion about this, but the law makers said that a shoplifting charge when you are 19 is not the same as a car theft when you are 29 and they can't then bring the first crime into the courtroom. Sunak should have come up with this instead of his stupid National Service.
If you go to places like the Canary Islands, every weekend you see people in overalls, out along the road, picking up litter, mending fences, clearing drains etc. You can get two Saturdays for a speeding offence up to 500 Saturdays for other non-violent crimes. You are picked up from the address you said you would be at and if you are not, you get 24 hours in police cells when they find you. This can turn into custodial if this happens more than a certain number of times. It works for them, it could work here.

Fantastic scheme idea in the Canaries, Hildie. So simple. The only aspect of it we'd be no good at is the execution of it 😐 You have to have robust systems to make it work. That's where we fall down.
It' reminds me of situations in school when tackling things like behaviour. You come up with a plan, a simple initiative to start to address it...and if all staff followed through, it'd work and the atmosphere would improve. But no - you get two or three staff who don't bother/can't be ar*sed and the whole thing unravels.
Everyone involved needs to make the decision to be on board. Some aren't on board before they've even started..

Some aren't on board before they've even started.. It could work on a county level, but much harder nationwide. The Canaries are small. In Bavaria people claiming asylum are expected to help out in return for benefits. The council posts work, for which you will be paid at 1€ph. This might be cleaning up after local flooding, cleaning streets etc. If you don't turn up you get your benefits reduced for that month. This is because as part of your claim for asylum you agree to support the community. On average about half of the registered asylum seekers in a town turn up and the others get money reduced. This also helps to alert authorities to who is still about and who may have disappeared or is working illegally. Each town has a team whose job it is to locate the people who don't turn up. In practice that might be just phoning them and notifying them the benefits are going down, but it could also mean a visit from customs officials and you don't know which it will be. Not that any country is very worried about asylum seekers leaving but they do need to know to stop the benefits

Thanks for that Riki. I've forwarded it to my pal - not that I think she would be eligible (probably reserved for younger sufferers) but even so, it's good to know there's always something more that can help.
