Politics aside Hildie - that is one brilliant relationship to have with an ex. Clearly you are still mates 😁

We are Maris. I made it a point for the children. You have to be grown up about things, you can plan the perfect murder in your mind, ha ha ha!!!!

The Election is getting me down. I watched QT last night and felt completely dispondant. Andrew Mitchell was just awful and that Lib Dem woman drove me mad. Yvette Cooper was alright, but I've always thought she was alright..I like Ed as well. I still can't vote for Labour though.
Putting an SDP MP on it (in Birmingham) is just daft. They got 4% of UK votes, yet have 14 seats. Our system is a bit nuts...

Decided I will vote Conservative this week (Yes I know...) Dithering Sunak will be out which I will be glad about but the prospect of a super majority is to be avoided I think. Starmer is so weak. David Lammy's comments this week were ignorant but I have never heard such ugly language as that from celebrity Labour supporter David Tennant about Kemi Badenoch. It made me realise we will get a lot more of this kind of thing. Dismay.

You must do what you feel is best Maris.
I didn't think Tennant's comments were that bad, considering where he was and what was happening including how he feels. He said he wished her no ill but wished she would shut up. He said nothing racist, he didn't even swear.
I could say a lot worse about her.

I have thought about it a lot and can never decide what is better. The last one we had was a disaster, the Lib Dems are not forgiven from my point of view.

It's funny Hildie because a while back I was sure I was going to vote Labour in this election, which tbh, I did not expect quite so soon. However, having seen more and more of them, especially Starmer, I have dwindling confidence in them. He just is not straight imo. I grant that some folk badly need a leg up; we took a bus ride across South London last week and saw a lot of poverty, poor housing and people generally down on their luck. The thing that was most noticeable though was the density of population - the pavements were so crowded, people were walking in the road. There are just too many people for even basic infrastructure to cope. I felt sorry for those I saw because there will just be more need, with less to go round, no matter what Labour's promises. Labour will obviously spend just as we coming out of the economic trough with inflation slowly going down - but they give little clue as to where the money's coming from except trotting out the fully costed fully funded cliche. Not that the Conservatives look any more plausible. I spose people must think that Starmer is the least bad option... As for Tennant and his rant (which I saw as nothing but virtue signalling) attacking Badenoch out of the blue in that way. It shocked me. No, he wasn't racist, he didn't swear and wanted her to 'shut up' (that's nice) but looked forward to the day when she does not exist! I think that's appalling! What does he want her to shut up on? The woman wants to protect children from being dosed with hormones, maintain women's safe spaces - or is it because she's on the side of biology? Which surely nobody can actually refute... But being an MP - no, being a woman MP - she is used to being insulted. What a state of affairs. I get fed up with this sort of insult and mud slinging - it's this I think we'll get more of. I have looked at the possible contenders for Labour's front bench and apart from Reeves and Rayner, I didn't know any of them. I guess I will find out soon enough. My vote will not be because I like the Tories but the hope for keeping a sizeable opposition - which I think is always needed. Whether they'll be effective, that's another thing.
I agree with you about PR. I was merely commenting on the SNP in particular having so many seats for so few votes.

How can any sane voter vote for a party that won't explain how that party is going to finance any of its future promises? After the Truss fiasco I felt sorry for Sunak, he had picked up a poisoned chalice, it seemed to me at the time that very few even wanted to step up to the plate, sadly he may now even lose his own seat, this is a repeat of the old Emperor's tales.

I wanted to qualify why I will vote Conservative. Round here, just listening to folk, it seems Reform has a lot of followers. Extremely worrying. Whether this will be dented by covert comments heard this week, who knows? Some people might even agree with them! Therefore, a Tory vote will keep things safer here.

Very few posters in windows or elsewhere. Driving through local shopping centres, saw two canvassing pitches - both for Reform...I saw people stopping and others passing giving thumbs up. Drove on to Lidl where there was a copy of this notice in each of the trolleys in the bay: Have you noticed though, there is nothing exciting, hopeful or 'feel good' about this election 🤔

Because there's no money Maris. Nobody can do a big thing.
Changing planning laws will stop developers holding on to land for years, something May wanted to stop but couldn't because most of the big housing developers were Tory donors who wanted to build 4 bed, 2 bathroom, double garage luxury properties at the top end of the scale and not want councils knew thry needed.
It will also mean wind turbines getting permission that doesn't take 7 years. My sister didn't really want wind turbines in the fields opposite her house, but now she likes them. She says it's like watching the sea.
Nursery schools attached to every infant school will make a slow steady change. Not because there aren't some good ones now, but if you can't afford them, you cant go to work.
Everything is a long term plan, there are no easy fixes. We've had 14 years of austerity, you don't suddenly get a pot of gold.
The trans thing is an overblown storm in a teacup. People have been trans for centuries. Making environments safer for everyone is the way ahead. That means more bus stops, regular buses, better street lighting, CCTV, regs for installing toilets etc. O.01% of the population aren't the issue.

By the way if you'd been wondering what Rees-Mogg has been up to during the election campaign, where he has been noticeable by his absence, wait no more.
He has been touring Somerset with a camera crew filming his own fly on the wall documentary about his life, politics and his faith. This might be interesting in and of itself, but surely he should have been doing some actual campaigning and interviews. I think he has a pretty safe seat, so he might not be too worried but he has been noticeably absent.
This only came to light when he was filmed at the weekend attending a first communion service.

Last I heard he's one of the likelihoods to lose his seat..maybe he's seen the writing on the wall. Well, none of the things you mention Hildie seem that exciting to me but then, none of Conservative's do either - and some plain daft. More nursery places might be promised (as it was for the Conservatives) but unable to actually be delivered for various reasons. You're right - there is no money. Not that it's any comfort but it's the same in the rest of Europe and we're not as badly off as some. What do you deduce from that? I'd say, Conservative rule notwithstanding, COVID must have had a massive and lasting financial impact on all. I agree with your trans viewpoint. It should be no big deal, but it's always, always, right up there, centre stage. They keep it there. I read something a gay bloke said this week about Pride day, week, now month. He said if your sexuality is something you feel no shame about, you shouldn't have 'pride' in it either. He wanted to get on with his life. I get what he was saying. Why can't people just 'be' without a song and dance about it?

Rees-Mogg is fighting a strong Labour challenge in his North East Somerset and Hanham constituency against Dan Norris, the mayor of the West of England, who was previously MP in the seat until he was defeated by Rees-Mogg in 2010. Apparently he is proposing building a wall on the English Channel.
