Hi all, not a great day yesterday, I was my fault I turned over in bed without thinking and I dislodged the surgical dressing and had no way of redressing the now open sore, I had an early appointment anyway at my doctor's for another issue so I thought maybe I could see the nurse their too, wrong choice though, apparently nobody in the nursing department was available and they don't do any nurse appointments on a Saturday, so.... It was a 111 call, then my phone's new SIM card kept zoning in and out, I made three different calls and had switched to my landline but they kept calling me on my cell phone, that was all in vain too. My last option was my local A&E , last time I was there it took seven hours to get sorted, anyway I had no more choices ,upon my arrival there they refused to let me in , which turned out to be a bonus as the person on the entrance sent me to the furthest entrance away, the minor injuries department, after spend over twenty minutes on the introduction screen ,I had to get assistance because surgical dressings wasn't an option on the monitor, the staff were great though and I eventually got my head recovered and was all done and dusted in just under three hours. I did a little research on my old phone's performance and discovered that the new issue SIM card are actual 0.03 mm thinner than the original, undefeated I cut out a SIM sizes packer from a clear pop bottle and slid that shim over the top of my new SIM and wallah! We are now cooking with gas.

Morning all: A chilly weekend, won't be going anywhere today. I'm going to do some baking, apple crumbles and apple pies for the freezer. Have you ever made apple and cheese pies, Ron? Kenton Archer's apple and cheese pie won first prize at the Ambridge flower and produce show last month (although many of the entries were destroyed when a table mysteriously collapsed) and now features on the specials menu at the Bull.

Good morning all. Alexa's joke this morning. What's stranger than a talking dog?.... A spelling bee. Straight out of a christmas cracker! She's doing her best.

Very cold here. I have put jeans on today, I haven't been able to wear them for months (since I broke my foot.) I am not going out today. Nigel will take Leo for a walk for me, so I can rest my foot a bit.

I hope you're having a better day today ... and tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...

Nope, never tried that. I wonder what cheese is used, I usually only buy Wensleydale as we both like it. I have made three apple crumbles, two goes in the freezer and one for today's dessert. I made a few Rhubarb crumbles in the summer so well stocked up for the winter months now.

Have you ever made apple and cheese pies, Ron? Kenton Archer's apple and cheese pie won first prize at the Ambridge flower and produce show last month (although many of the entries were destroyed when a table mysteriously collapsed) and now features on the specials menu at the Bull. Nope, never tried that. I wonder what cheese is used, I usually only buy Wensleydale as we both like it. I have made three apple crumbles, two goes in the freezer and one for today's dessert. I made a few Rhubarb crumbles in the summer so well stocked up for the winter months now. I found this recipe for Kentish apple and cheese pie, which it is claimed was a favourite of Dickens'. Wensleydale is one of the suggested cheeses. Ingredients For the crust 250g shortcrust pastry (homemade of course, but I’m sure that you have a recipe) For the filling Juice of 1 lemon 800g cooking apples (although if using bramley’s seedling I would throw in some firmer eating apples too) 75g-100g sugar Nutmeg 75g hard cheese, cheddar would work well, or a more subtle caerphilly or wensleydale 1 x 22cm-ish pie dish Method Preheat the oven to 200C. Squeeze the lemon juice into a large bowl. Peel and core the apples and then slice or chop as you like, it doesn’t need to be dainty. Roll the apple slices around in the lemon juice as you go along, to prevent them from discolouring. Now layer half the apple slices into the pie dish and then sprinkle with half of the sugar and a good grating of nutmeg. I put a pie funnel into my dish at this point, it holds the pastry up and allows the steam to escape, giving better pastry every time. I also love to see a little blackbird’s head poking out of the crust. Layer over the rest of the apples and the remaining sugar if your apples are very tart (they will sweeten as they bake). Slice the cheese finely and cover the apples with a layer of cheese. Now roll out your pastry and cut a small cross in the middle if you have a pie funnel. Lift the pastry onto the pie using a rolling pin, don’t worry about any cracks, a few pastry leaves seem appropriate in any case, and will cover a multitude of sins. Press the pastry down onto the edge of the dish and trim away any excess. Decorate with leaves if you like and brush with milk. Bake for 30-40 mins until golden brown. Eat while hot (otherwise the cheese will firm up) with a good dollop of cream.

Not much of a day today. There was a touch of brightness around mid-morning (i.e. when I get up) which tempted me to go for a walk, but it clouded over almost as soon as I went out. It was a bit chilly, but not scarf and gloves cold so quite pleasant for walking. The sun was just about visible through a veil of cloud, but I wouldn't have described it as sunny, and the sunny spells promised for this afternoon, when the cloud thickened, did not materialise. It's forecast to rain overnight, but should have stopped by the time I get up.
Mrs Tickle is proper poorly and has spent the day in bed. It may just be that she has caught the cold that I've had - she is prone to headaches and migraines at the best of times and more so when she has a cold. I've had plenty of exercise going up and down the stairs with potables and comestibles. She seems to have enjoyed the red pepper and tomato soup I knocked up this evening - soup is about the limit of my culinary skills.
It's all kicking off here. I mentioned that the police were in attendance at the house 7 doors down from us on the evening of 1st Oct. They were there again in the morning 2 or 3 days ago. Tonight there has been an ambulance in the vicinity, too, although I'm not sure which house it was attending - not the same one as far as I could tell. It seemed to be there for the best part of an hour. Maybe I should call out the fire brigade so we can get the full set.

Dark and dank this morning, hopefully it will cheer up later.
We should have gone out yesterday to watch a bit of racing. All geared up, picnic organised, chairs in car etc but Mr T work up and had several dizzy spells. Unfortunately that scuppered any chance of driving to Aldershot (about 45 miles) and although I could have driven he wouldnt have enjoyed the afternoon. Dizzy spells passed by early afternoon so I had a very disgruntled Mr on my hands. Not sure what caused it but DiL (sister in A&E) thinks it could be ocular migraine or vertigo as she suffers from the same thing.
Off to have tea and chat with my friend a bit later, slow start this morning. Going to make my mincemeat and put the fruit to soak for the Christmas cake this afternoon. Will do the puddings on Wednesday or Thursday.

[Mince pies originated in the Middle Ages as large, savory pies filled with minced meat, fruit, and spices. The name "mincemeat" comes from the 15th century, when the meat was preserved with sugar and alcohol. ]

Bright and sunny now, but I was scraping the ice off my car at 7.15am this morning. I will have to locate my gloves! Brrrr!

Still dank and dismal with little chance of it improving I think. Apparently the rain hammered it down in the night, for a change I managed to sleep all night.
