No finger pointing, on my part, merely expressing my total disgust at their BNP/UKIP political lies. Todays Somalis are yesterdays Indian/Pakis. I lived next door to Southall in West London for most of the first half of my life. The population of Asians was around 80+ %. They ate cats, were unclean, mistreated their women folk etc. (according to the haters). Amazing how they have 'cleaned up their act', in the interim. The same treatment was given to the Poles (20% in Ealing), the West Indians ,the jews, the Belgians,Italians...how far do we want to go back...? Yes it is disconcerting for second generation immigrants. We breifly moved to a semi-rural new housing development. The second generation were little thugs, with no connection with their surroundings, so no care for it. I expect they are grown up now and settled with their families. The kind of evil spread by the right wing, stimulates and exaccerbates these problems. If you cannot walk down the road, as a youngster, without being thought of as a thug, what do you do? What youth always does, rebel. Don't brand me an airy fairy liberal, I know there are problem families, in all parts of our community but don't please, tar the innocent. I want them on my side! BTW An awful lot of white home bred Brits disgust me! rant over..........

Arena. I agree, and I also have no time at all for BNP and UKIP. BNP held a 'rally' in Bristol a few months ago and threatened a young Somali woman I know. She was absolutely terrified and telephoned me in a panic and I told her to go to the nearest shop phone the Police and stay there. Those (BNP) thugs exist in one form or another in every city and most countries. The far right in Germany and the USA are very frightening people. They deliberately target those who are 'different' and appeal to the mentally challenged parts of our population.
We have had a black population in Bristol for 300 or more years and there has never really been a problem. The so called riots back in the 80's? Well a young black man I employed lived one street away and never heard a thing.
The main problem now is sheer numbers congregated in one small area, and I most certainly blame successive Councils for that. The unemployed and in some cases unemployable youth find something to do with their time and sadly that is not always legal or particularly conducive to a peaceful co-existence.

They have always done that. Even named the area after the immigrants (Petty France) in London.

I think Arena that people coming to the UK way back tended to congregate in one or other area out of choice, not becasue of some diktat from a local council. The East End of London attracted jewish people, and that is where they could work almost as a collective, and support one another as in general they were viewed with a lot of suspicion by the general public.

Yes JJ
That same area, Brick Lane is now the habitat of the Pakistan community. If you like to google it, you'll find it was home to other immigrant groups
When WWI broke out hundreds of thousands of political refugees from Belgium were ghettoed in the East End of London. BTW :They also brought a very popular exotic food import .......chips!

Not many people know that.
I suppose you are going to tell me next that the Turks brought Delight!

The Russian Jews brought fish, fried in batter. Some bright spark paired them up with the Belgian chips and (typically) they became traditional British grub.
Now, we try to introduce them to the world as ,good old British fish and chips....

I think the Jewish fried fish was often eaten cold, on Shabbos as cooking was forbidden. The Belgian frîtes I've tasted were the best ever... with mayo, of course...
Down in Brick lane, premises have stayed within a trade, e.g., the Kosher butcher has become the Halal butcher.
I think the word 'ghetto' is often misused - a ghetto was not somewhere a community chose to live, it was where an ethnic group lived by law, being forbidden to live elsewhere.

Indeed so Scorp and I think it originated in Italy where jewish eople could come out of the ghetto to work, but had to return at night.

I'm with you TJ... I did a lot of it, and ended up with half a lung missing - despite having kicked the habit thirty-one years earlier - it's a pretty stupid business, a drug that costs good money, and gives you nothing other than an addiction... at least cannabis gave you a buzz, and I'm told cocaine can be very pleasurable - but nicotine just makes you need more of it. A bit like religion, really...

Fortunately my ticker checks out OK. but in curing me of lung cancer (for which, don't get me wrong, I am very grateful) seven years ago, I am left unable to walk more than a few yards without being à bout de souffle - oh well, I wasn't planning on going anywhere...

I CAN't exercise! My heart has a torn valve which causes problems if my heart rate rises. I too sit down a lot!
