Nobody has mentioned the trial on the shooting by a police officer of what we know now was a high profile gangster. As this was not known by anyone except the police (hence their action) it makes the jury verdict 100% sound. Imo, a charge of murder should never have been brought...so much for Khan who has never shown support to the Met. It's dreadful that this officer now has a price on his head, in fear of his life. Incidents such as this need investigating in another way. I listened to a woman on the wireless this morning: she raised the issue of rape trials where the woman's background/phone exchanges/dating history is all exposed for a jury - yet nobody knew an iota of Kaba's background. Good point. The video footage of him (thankfully ) released by the judge was chilling indeed. Maybe police who always have to be heavily armed should wear masks, like they do in some other countries ? There facial identities should be concealed in court too, unless they are found guilty.

What do you think of this call for reparations?
The definition of slavery reparations is that it is something demanded by those who have never experienced it, from those who have never practiced it.
I think a few nations see an opportunity here in the light of the personages in this government - principally Lammy who has been very vocal about this in the past... countries will see a weakness there to be explored and tested. Yes, it's all a bit different when you are in charge of the purse strings, eh?
If my relative in the 1800s was a murderer, am I guilty as well? I don't think so.

Starmer has said we won't be paying reparations as a nation. Some families who did profit and are still wealthy on the back of it have made their own reparations in part and worked with the local govts to do things like building clinics, school extensions, provided scholarships etc.
The CofE has said it will invest money over the next years in creating places of shelter for the poor and homeless in the Caribbean and other projects.
I think we can be honest about our past in terms of slavery and we can be honest about our past in terms of Empire. As a nation we did allow people to go to these countries and leech their natural resources. We got rid of their farms to replace them with coffee, cocoa and tea plantations.
When we left, we left them in no fit state to flourish.
We did not build council houses, put in running water, street lights, and drainage systems as an example. We did not educate ordinary children or provide those citizens including women with democracies. We left no NHS or welfare systems, just a guide book. There was no transition planning.
We simply left, yet many of the owners continued running the businesses from afar. UK businesses still run these plantations. Some of them even tried to get covid loans.
So yes, we could have done a lot better and it's not going back to the times of slavery to know that.
What Starmer has alluded to is support for green energy projects and money for research projects so that the future can be better. There is no timescale for that, but it would involve UK industry, science and engineering and also from that perspective help us to.

Surely, we should be tackling modern slavery here in the UK now, I thought I read somewhere some causes of this stem from the illegal boat people being smuggled in. ?

We could of course do both, though (without hearing all the arguments) tend to side with Maris over the question of reparation for slavery.

So do I. What Starmer is talking about investment and research opportunities for UK science and industry.
That is not what a lot of the commonwealth are asking for.

If we paid reparations to each nation for the sins of a tiny number of our wealthiest forefathers (for that's what we are talking about.. AND a long way back) we will be a country nobody would be able to live in. Most ordinary folk back then were dirt poor - scraping a living - up chimneys, down mines, in mills - in short, being exploited! Yet it's their descendants who'd have to pay - not the descendants of rich perpetrators.
And there's no point in even mentioning the Africans complicit in the trade.
And what sort of sum are these countries talking about? It won't be a token amount that's for sure. I think the whole thing is nuts but like I said, this gov looks a good bet for coughing up. Lammy's previous comments, KS taking the knee - very positive signals for those who want to chance their arm.

Heat pump warranty, two year warranty.
Here is the difference between my ATAG gas boiler.
[ATAG boilers come with a standard 12-year warranty, with the option to extend to 18 years: 12-year warranty The standard warranty that comes with all ATAG boilers, and includes a lifetime guarantee on the heat exchanger 18-year warranty This extended warranty can be purchased by asking your ATAG installer about the Complete Care Pack. The 18-year warranty includes parts and labor, and covers unplanned maintenance for the life of the boiler. To keep the warranty valid, ATAG recommends having the boiler serviced annually by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. If a breakdown does occur, ATAG's customer helpline can be reached at 0800 680 0100. ]
Heat pumps.
[AI Overview Learn more … In the UK, the annual maintenance cost for a heat pump is usually between £100 and £300. This cost is relatively low compared to other heating systems, and regular servicing can help extend the lifespan of the heat pump. Here are some other things to consider about heat pump maintenance: Repair costs Minor repairs typically cost between £500 and £600, while more complex repairs can cost up to £2,000. Warranties Many manufacturers offer warranties that cover parts and labor for a certain number of years. Service plans Some service plans are available for between £10 and £20 per month. Energy suppliers Some energy suppliers offer tariffs that can help with the costs of running your heat pump. Grants Government grants may be available to help reduce the cost of installing a heat pump. Heat pumps are a long-term investment, with a lifespan of 15 to 25 years with proper care. This is longer than the 10 to 15 year lifespan of a gas boiler.]

They were discussing this on my local TV news.
[The UK is considering a ban on low-level letterboxes to protect postal workers and the public from injury and back pain: Background Low-level letterboxes can cause back pain for postal workers who repeatedly bend down to deliver mail. They can also make it easier for dogs to attack postal workers. ]

Where do we think all of those Georgian mansions and grand terraces came from. How did the Scottish Lords hang on to their castles after rebellion. How did all those Mills flourish. It was lots of people involved in slavery and a lot more involved in Empire and the colonies. I don't think we should be paying specific reparations. However it would help with migration if we could create eco industries and other projects in these countries. Currently the Chinese are moving into Africa buying up mining rights, selling arms, carving out dependencies and now they are heading to the Pacific Islands. Should Europe watch it happen. I don't think so.

Why don't the NHS charge for treatment to people who do not qualify for free service. In France if you cannot produce the relevant paperwork you pay.
