Morning all: Some very interesting programmes on yesterday all about D-Day. My dad was at Dunkirk so it meant a lot to me to see some of the old soldiers there. The best of the programmes I thought was The Unheard Tapes. Brilliantly done with excellent historians giving background - but it was hearing first hand testimonies from survivors that was truly affecting. Recommended. What a debt we owe those men.

True Maris, my dad never really spoke about it much, my mum told me that for a few weeks while waiting for help to arrive he and his regiment lived only on rhubarb from nearby fields. They were so ill, but when help arrived and they ran to the boats his best mate was shot and my dad shot in the leg. He ended up in Aldershot hospital with shrapnel ingrained in his leg, sadly his mate died of his wounds. Anyway, dad never told us what he went through, however one day he and I went to the Royal British legion for a lunchtime drink and a man walked up to my dad and they hugged each other and tears flowed. They had both served in the same regiment in the war and both were gunners. This was around 1970 and they hadn't met since the day they got off the beach in France in 1944, apparently on different boats and they had assumed each other hadn't made it. I learned more about their heroics and bravery in that 20 or so minutes than I had ever known before.

Morning all: Less than two weeks now and it will be the longest day, then clocks will start going the other way again. Still haven't sat out in the sun so far this year.

It's bitterly cold here today. I have the heating on and two cardigans. I am reading a book by Pearl S. Buck. It is called The Promise. I thought I had all of her books and was happy to find this one. It is about the war when Japan had invaded China and China sent her crack troops to Burma to support the British. Told in the form of a family's story, it is non the less factual. It explains so much about how the different cultures interacted. Always told from the Chinese perspective, it is fascinating and heart breaking.

I'm very surprised they haven't shown the Michael Caine/Glenda Jackson film The Great Escaper. It was so good, they were both amazing in it. Watch it if you get a chance.

It seems very odd that Michael Mosley got lost walking so near to the amenities on the Greek island. Now they have found a body, which seems likely to be him. How dreadful for his family. What a shame. It is wintry here today. I am wearing a winter jumper and skirt. I'm tired of winter clothes. I wish I could wear some bright colours. I will watch that film later, thanks for the recommendation. There are so many films that I start watching and turn off after a few minutes.

Unfortunately, I'm just guessing Althea,he probably slipped. It looks a dreadfully desolate island full of those awful sharp rocks it's hard to walk on. The main paths are cleared but he seems to have gone up one of the hills, probably on a path and then somehow tumbled. I wouldn't be going for any kind of walk in 40° heat, I'd be in the shade all day.
I think Id be bored out of my brain somewhere like that. Then perhaps the villa is lovely, and they had books and good food. Apparently most tourists use the water taxis to get around to the beaches and little villages. I like a good old town to wander about in.
