Billy Murray (born 6 October 1941) is an English actor, best known for playing Don Beech in The Bill from 1995 to 2004, Johnny Allen in the BBC soap opera EastEnders from 2005 to 2006, Captain John Price in the video games Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Murray was born in East London and knew the gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray. I am often amused by the number of people who 'Knew Ronnie and Reggie Kray'. It seems to extend to just about anyone who lived roughly in that area at about that time. I could say that I 'knew' Ronnie Biggs. Not true. I did not know him but I met him about four or five times as he was dating a friend of my sister. Had I known him he might have told me where he buried part of the loot!

Had I known him he might have told me where he buried part of the loot! Watching the drama Mrs Biggs it looked as if Ronnie dated everybody's sister I once asked a bloke from Bermondsey exactly where Bermondsey: we were looking north along the south of the river from a window on the 5th floor of St Thomas's at the time. Instead of answering he said, with a good deal of pride, There's more criminals per square foot in Bermondsey than anywhere else in the country.Later I related this to a nurse, also from Bermondsey, and she said, Yes, and most of them are from my family. She said they all turned up for her father's funeral - those who were out, and still alive anyway. She said she was going, Is that...? Is that...? and her mother: Yes, yes, it is - Yes, it is. The nurse had got out of it, though. I liked her. She was a big fan of Rumpole.

Bill Maynard is 88 today, Happy Birthday Bill! When I lived in the Midlands I was not too far away from where he lived. I was then connected to Barnardos, and approached him about doing a charity event on their behalf. He was then quite a big star but the fee he demanded was ridiculous. Funnily enough Geoffrey Hughes who sort of succeeded him in Heartbeat also moved in nearby, he too was approached but declined saying "I don't do charity" You never see them in the same light after these sort of experiences

Ian Rush, the ex-footballer was born in Flint in Flintshire. When the local council refurbished The Cornist Hall, they asked Ian Rush to come and re-open it. He asked an exorbitant fee and we were told,he asks so much money because he doesn't want to do personal appearances. You're right Gus,it does alter the way you see people.

A day too late: ohn Cowper Powys (8 October 1872 – 17 June 1963) was a British novelist, lecturer, philosopher, literary critic, and poet. Although Powys published a collection of poems in 1896 and his first novel in 1915, he did not gain success as a writer until he published the novel Wolf Solent in 1929. He was influenced by many writers, but he has been particularly seen as a successor to Thomas Hardy, and Wolf Solent, A Glastonbury Romance (1932), along with Weymouth Sands (1934) and Maiden Castle (1936), are often referred to as his Wessex novels. SOME years ago, in the slate-quarrying village of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales, I visited Phyllis Playter, the longtime companion of the writer John Cowper Powys. She was a tiny, ancient woman whose skin was stretched like parchment over her bones. I asked her how she had met Powys. She said, "It was in Joplin, Missouri, in 1921, and Mr. Powys was lecturing on Dostoevski. The lecture was so powerful that three people in the audience fainted. I knew he was the man for me." Read on...
