Max sadly isn't doing so well, he was operated on Thursday and since then hasn't been himself at all. He is in no pain now and moving much better, but he seems to be very vacant. He doesn't react to things how he used too, he doesn't seem to remember things, and he stands in the middle of the room and looks about him almost wondering where he is. I'm taking him back to the vet on Friday by which time I'm hoping things will have improved by then. It's almost like he has had a major dose of dementia since Thursday. Not sure what to do now, but I feel dreadfully guilty. Has anyone else found their animal a completely different one after surgery? Will he get better or am I being delusional?

I think we are all like this after surgery. It takes a while for your body to shrug off the anaesthetic.
Come on Max!

Max is a little brighter and moving much easier, however he appears to have forgotten lots of stuff still. I'm hoping it will come back and we will see flashes of our old dog again. Early days still I suppose......

Some good news to report on Max my lovely old and faithful hound. He is coming back to us, his daft behaviour and foibles are back along with some of his bounce (albeit a tad subdued) during his walks. He still has stitches and wears a lampshade till Tuesday but he was up to his old tricks of mooching around the garden eating sticks (I know their not good for him, but he's been doing it for 12 years) and looking lively when shown his lead for walkies. He even woofed at the doorbell today whilst racing down the hall knocking things with his lampshade. So hopefully soon he will be fully operational and back on the scale of daftness.

Good news norty! Once the lampshade has gone he will be your old dog back again I'm sure. How old is he? Our old boy is coming up for 12 and keeps well (touch wood)he is still as daft as a brush if a tad eccentric!

He's coming up for 12 and has always been a lively dog who has never walked anywhere. So seeing him slow and unsteady was horrid for us and alien to him.
He has a few changes facing him in a months time when he moves with us to Edinburgh, but I feel that as long as he is with us he will be fine.

Poor Max has suddenly declined in the last month and has the vet completely baffled. His bloods and urine tests have all come back clean yet he is looking very unwell. He has lost an enormous amount of weight, is always thirsty (but no sign of diabetes) and his coat looks dreadful. He is also having accidents indoors which is something he has never ever done before even when he was gravely ill in the summer. We have decided to take him to the vet today to have him put down, I think he is suffering in silence and I cannot bear to watch him get any worse. Max has been my loyal companion, shadow and friend for 12 years and has brought us all happy times of which I shall treasure for ever.

Norty.
I really feel for you. I have had to make that decision a few times in the past.
The trouble with life is that you outlive a lot of fabulous dogs.

This sounds very much like our 'best friend' - diagnosed with lymphoma last Friday. Check his glands in the neck. There is no cure but since he has been put on cortisone (steroids) he is almost back to his normal self. Our boy started drinking too much at the beginning of October and all blood tests and scans were clear. We know he hasn't got long so each good day is a bonus. My thoughts are with you Norty, they break our hearts.

Thank you all,
Max will be much missed but we will think on the fun and daft times we had with him.
I'm sorry to hear about your own dog Star, and as you say enjoy him for as long as you have him.
