Well, it would seem that VW have been cheating, and the collective press and chatterati have thrown their hands up in horror. How COULD they.
Why is the average motorist not in the least surprised? well, when did any of us ever get the claimed MPG out of any car we have ever owned?
Simple, when a new car is tested simple little things are done, such as removing the spare wheel and tools to save weight and disconnecting the drive belt to the alternator to save power. They used to tape over all the joints in the bodywork but that was seen to be a bit unfair.
You and I look at the brochure. Wow, 54mpg on the urban cycle. And what is our first thought? Mine is, 'Oh yeah, in your dreams'
They ALL cheat, and the VW boss has fallen on his sword. But I reckon now would be a great time to buy VW shares.

Quite right too - lying through their teeth seems endemic in the motor industry A simple solution to this particular problem would be to force VW to give its software to all car manufacturers, then although all emission figures would be lie, at least we have a comparative standard, e.g. we would know that x is worse than using the VW standard
