Pubs originally had pub-signs ,because most of the populace couldn't read . a sign was generally showing allegiance to a monarch or other dignitary. Often these were coats of arms and the locals gave them jokey names. In some cases these became the accepted name. For instance a coat of arms showing a boar and a musical instrument became known as the Pig and Whistle.

There was an episode of Radio 4's "Word of Mouth", back in 24th October 2017, where Michael Rosen explores the origins of pub names. It's still available on BBC Sounds, if anyone is interested.
