I don't know if anyone saw the prog on BBC4 last night. I think it was called 'The Ships that Made Britain Great'
A great documentary without all the usual flashing images and old footage.
And I have set up my box to record the rest of the series

I haven't seen it but I might. HMS Pickle's story is one of legend, at least in Penzance. There's a banner paraded every October which dates back a long way, which is said to have been marched from Penzance to Madron church after the fishing fleet encountered HMS Pickle - before the news of Trafalgar officially reached as far as Falmouth - and took the news of Nelson's death into town where it was announced at the Assembly Rooms. So goes the tale. What's odd about it is that nowhere in any of the local newspapers of the time, or any journal or diary, is there any mention of it. It's an untestable urban myth, if Penzance in 1805 can be described as urban.
I wonder how much of that the program gets right.

There, that was exciting. A great local man, Tom Cunliffe. It's a while since I saw him on a screen. He tells a tale well.
And no, not a word about the Penzance fishing fleet.
