Well, I see the weather forecast is not looking so good for Somerset and indeed the majority of the rest of the West.
But the Army have come to the rescue! I heard a report that the Royal Marines arrived yesterday to 'assess the situation' They reported back to HQ that it is wet, and raining so were ordered to stay indoors until it stopped raining.
All this activity far too late as a result of Cobra committee sitting around and drinking tea and Mr Cameron saying 'Something must be done' (where have I heard that before!)
And Michael Evis of Glastonbury infamy fame was on the radio this morning. He alleges that when the Environment Agency took over from the drainage board they sold all the drag line dredgers for scrap so dredging stopped. Apparently it is more important to them to protect the bank voles pretty little birdies and other wildlife as opposed to protecting people and property. I don't doubt what he said is true.
I was thinking in the shower this morning that if this sort of situation had occurred in other parts of the world I have no doubt by now the UK government would have sent Hercules aircraft laden with tents food aid and all sorts of other kit.
But this is only Somerset (my back yard as it happens) and there are not many people there, and those that are there are permanently pissed on cider and only some of them have learned how to tie their own shoelaces.
Rant over.....

I saw that on the news. Cameron really is a ditherer. All talk. They showed people who have been isolared since New Years day and the army having a look round. Nothing to report Sarge.
I wonder what would happen if Downing Street flooded?

Indeed so Jim.
It has been all over our local news for weeks now. Kids can't get to school but more important is that old people can't even get to hospital appointments.
I gather that some of the roads are open to 4 wheel drive vehicles, but it is still a very long detour for most.
One amusing side line was that The Sun sent a Journalist complete with a page 3 girl to hand out lager and Sun Tee shirts. The villagers told them quite bluntly to 'F*** off, we are not a F***ing Zoo.'
When through a source I heard that they were sending a journalist (I did not know about the P3 girl at that stage) I wrote a spoof piece for the friend who told me. I was not too far off the mark either!

TODAY we urge rain-battered Brits to pray — with the Patron Saint of good weather.
This January is the wettest on record for parts of the UK. Rev Susan Evans, whose Lincs church is named after Patron Saint Medard, last night led prayers — begging: “Dear Lord, we’ve had enough.”
There we are.................SORTED!

I have a sneaky feeling that prayer will not be quite enough Arena. It didn't do Noah much good. And the great news is, it is raining here again, and damned cold as well.
I think that I am wise live on a hill.
The bad news is, I think I am running low on cut wood so will have to get the damned chainsaw out.

When you think of the serious floods, tsunamis and other natural disasters that happen all over the planet, don't you think asking for spiritual intervention for our relatively meagre problems, is a bit unchristian?

This has finally reached the news in Oz - presumably because rich posh people are getting it now; previously I'd only heard about it here. An article in The Spectator (Australia)* tells that Prince Charles was down there meeting some of the flooded locals, and a reporter asked him if he blamed the Environment Authority. His response was: You might well think that - I couldn't possibly comment. I do love me Royals - apols to any of you that don't. JJ, I hope there's some relief in sight. * I wish they hadn't done that. I was perfectly happy with the pommy one

Prue,
Sadly there is no relief, and the forecast suggests it is going to be an awful lot worse before it gets any better. As I write it is chucking it down. My land is now awash but the property is safe - another inch or so and it will go down the path into the road, probably helping to flood the people at the bottom of the hill. That has happpened before and I ahve loaned them a petrol pump with 3" outlets that really does shift a lot of water. Last time it came back wiht a bottle of scotch attached!
I spoke to a friend on mine last week who told me (Friday) that the water had risen a metre overnight and was rising at the rate of 20mm an hour. He was rescuing cattle to save them from drowning and they have been dispersed far and wide. All the feed is underwater and the logistics of feeding is a nightmare, so many will have to go to slaughter.
I don't quite know why but we seem to have a strange mindset in this country. We are damned goood at sorting problems out, but blind to the fact that a little prevention will mean we wont need the cure.
But the wake up call has been nice people in nice houses in the Thames valley getting hit.

My bit is, for now at any rate, OK - but it is touch and go. Traffic seems to be moving, people are walking their dogs - and the postman has been! Just an advert, mind you...
