My immediate choice is Jasper Shrigg, in terms of ability and dialect.
And then John Appleby, for the ambience. The language of the novels is so well crafted.
Adam Dalgliesh for the moody atmosphere.
And finally, purely for Philip Glenister's performance of a lifetime, DCI Gene Hunt. What a guy.

Endeavour, Vera,, DCI Banks, Rebus (but my husband and I disagree about the actor. He prefers Ken Stott and I prefer the original John Hannah), and finally Jimmy Perez.

Endeavour is brilliant.The juxtaposition of the young 'intellectual' and the old style cop is what makes it.Plus some fine acting from the cast.

Coincidentally I was watching him last night as Nick Carver on a DVD of that strange ITV series animating prehistoric megafauna, "Primeval", in a similarly perplexed role to the one in Shetland. He's a fine actor. I enjoyed everything about Shetland, it was quite a production. |

Although I like DCI Banks both on TV and especially in book form I could not warm to Stephen Tomlinson’s portrayal of Banks. |

I love Mathew Shardlake, the hunchback lawyer/detective of CJ Sansom's books. As a historian, the descriptions of England under Henry VIII, are wonderful.
They bring the era to life. Shardlake is a slow, logical man and I love his attitude as he plods along and finally solves the crimes.
I like Cadfael, the clever priest of Ellis Peter's books too.
I think my favourite has to be Lord Peter Wimsey of the Dorothy L. Sayers books.

Columbo is one of my favourites, and Morse, Poirot and Vera. Of course, I love Poirot for the art deco sets and clothes, but I do think David Suchet's
portrayal of Poirot is marvellous.

I have been watching many episodes of Vera lately and enjoying them.
