Witches' were realish.
Back in the 15th century when drinking water was dangerous. There were alewives. These women brewed beer for the village. They had big cauldrons which they filled with water yeast grain and other ingredients. They boiled these ingredients ,stirring them with a long handled besom . They wore tall hats which doubled as a liquid measure. Of course having grain stored in their houses they had cats to fend off interested rats. All in all these ladies were greatly appreciated.
Fast forward to the 1680s ,and beer production was getting out of hand the temperance brigade began to rally over the years and by the 19th century had blackened the names of these fine ladies , picturing them as evil. The picture emerged over the years that their cat's were their devil sent 'familiars', they brewed poison in their cauldrons and the besom became their mode of transport as they flew around doing evil deeds.
