They might be able to do that and the Speaker can choose to ignore it.
I think with the advent of TV if we saw the PM or Leaders of the Opposition regularly giving a vulcan hand signal it would have been spotted.
I'm sure they might occasionally say in private to the Speaker "I could do without so and so chipping in", but considering how often some of them get chosen the Speaker clearly chooses to ignore those comments. He let's some right old eccentric and out of touch people rabbit on.
Yes, there is the convention of too and fro, but this was way beyond that. She was after all the person the discussion was about. Her article in the Guardian was considerably measured considering all that took place.

Agree Hildie. Regardless of who the MP is, the whole thing was shameful. I have to admit, when you hear her speak these days, she sounds ill (diabetes) either that, or she has lost it...But she is still the member for Hackney.

I had read that she was standing down at the next election. She is 70.
Perhaps she has changed her mind.
She is a very popular constituency MP and still lives in the place and has done all her life.
She does have diabetes and probably other things at 70, like everyone.

Now there's mud stirring going on with noises wanting Ricki out (liability?) and Penny in. It'd make little difference to their chances imo... but she ticks a lot iof boxes now we're into personality politics.
I listened to Kemi Badenoch this morning on LBC...my goodness, she can definitely stick up for herself. Calm, measured and serious. Just the sort you'd want in a leader... correction - just the sort I'd want. Popular? Unlikely I think.

It's all like children in the playground. It is frightening, the lack of maturity among MPS and AMS(Welsh MPS).

It always has been thus, Althea. Back in the day we only had newspapers and not much about actual politicians on broadcast news. Although they did do talking tours where if you felt like going to listen to them give a speech you could. The average MP was about 55, white and overweight and from some shire somewhere with a nice house and a brandy accent, as I recall. They were inclined to say things like 'Look here' etc.
That started to change in the 80s.
We have gone too far down the personality/looks thing. Someone said to me, well Starmer isn't very good looking is he and I just thought no! I don't care if a politician looks like a pug crossed with a hippo. I just want them to be sensible and pragmatic and honest (where they can). I would also like the Education Minister to occasionally say, 'Well I don't know much about satellite licensing, about as much as you actually I imagine. Perhaps you should speak to the minister for satellites".

I see the Govt has scrapped their Leasehold and Tenancy Reform Bill. Apparently they knew that their would be rebellions from the Tory MP landlords and members. So that big promise has bitten the dust now.

When were the people of this country ever asked if they wanted disabled people to live in extreme poverty. They don't even get let off council tax nowadays. Most people in supported living have about £26-30 per week to buy their food, clothes, travel etc.
I've said it before, but if we keep increasing the pension age, we will get more and more people unfit for work who need to claim disability benefits. They can't all be forced to work in Tesco. Even if they do, they'll work 16 hours and still claim housing benefit and UC to make up the rest. Currently most people have to work until they are 67 and they're knackered. Working full time at 65 is no laughs.

Esther McVey announces civil service rainbow lanyard ban in new Tory culture war (msn.com)
You go Esther, that will turn the country around. Telling Mavis she can't wear her flowery lanyard will make all the difference to everyone using any dept of the Civil Service as a customer. What is she on? Equality, Diversity and Inclusion have legal ramifications in the work place making everyone wear a DWP Lanyard won't change that. Mind you, I bet Mavis doesn't want to wear her DWP Lanyard on the bus to work!
I wonder which Tory donor is going to get the contract to make Civil Service lanyards and once we have them will we be heading towards the sunlit uplands. Who knew all we needed was a new lanyard - yeh!
War on woke, my backside. Esther should have a lanyard to say she works in the Tory Women Are Trouble Department - work it out!
