I see that the winner is -
Hull!
Wow, with John Prestcott that should be good.
(I spent 2 years of my life on and off in Hull and both loved and loathed it simultaneously)

Personally I am delighted that Hull won. They have put their heart and soul into the bid and the people have really got behind them. Hull has a lot going for it already but has had lots of problems over the years - high unemployment being one of them. It is steeped in history and has already made huge strides in the arts and music. Great shopping too! I wish them well for 2017.

I wouldn't say that in either place if you want to get out unscathed!

Don't get me wrong, I liked Hull as well, it was just the job I was doing at Saltend which was hell. Cold wet and stressed a lot of the time. It was at the time when there was still a fishing fleet. 7000 men at sea for 3 weeks at a time and home for 3 days. Anyone thinks they can drink never saw that lot in action in some of the pubs. I was young and single And there were 7000 men at sea most of the time.........

Looks a tad more attractive that Hull!
Was it Latvia that had prohibition for a long time, same as Finland where there were more drunks per square mile than anywhere on the planet?
With the exception of bars in Hull full of Icelandic fishermen. Happy carefree days.......

Sounds like a bit of a disaster with their shopping centre collapsing!

What was that saying - save me from Hull Hell and Halifax My first reaction was The Dalesman's Litany :- From Hull and Halifax and Hell good Lord deliver me but it appears you're going way further back, through A Litany of St. Omer's written in 1682 about Lord Halifax to The Beggar's Litany of around 1600, a warning against the ready use of the gibbet in Halifax :- From Hull, Hell and Halifax, good Lord deliver us To keep it on topic, I'm not sure whether there's that much culture in Hull but popular culture appears to think not :-)

My friend Nicky Wood was part of Leicester's ECC team (failed).
Here she is with some of her unbelievable sand sculptures.

I used to drive through Leicester on my way back from Norfolk.
I don't know if it is still there but ther used to be a tall chimney I passed which looked vaguely phallic.......
