Have any of you done any city cycling?
For years I travelled from West London to Fleet street by bike. We were few in those days and considered quite mad. Alexis Sayle was the only one I knew who came to Fleet Street on his bike.
Personally I think painting blue lines on dangerous crossings and calling them 'superhighways' (superdieways) is madness. Another of Boris's Big Blunders!

I have done a lot of cycling and inevitably some of that was in cities. Not a pleasant experience. Best cycling is at dawn in the summer cycling the lanes and seeing hearing and smelling the world wake up. Well, your particular part of the world.
There was an interesting experiment recently in Bristol. A journey of some 8 miles from Yate to the centre, by bike, bus and car. The bike won by quite a margin. The bus was in 3rd place, so those of you who are good at working things out will have by now realised the car came second!
I also saw some figures published by Sustrans a while back. If you ask anyone what their chances are of getting wet on a 3 mile commute by bike most will say it is perhaps 1 in 20 or thereabouts. In reality it is 1 in 50.

I spent Idyllic summers ,between marriages, cycling on the canal towpaths of Greater London. Traffic free, nice secluded pubs and an occassional bit of voluntary lock keeping...........

Most summers between marriages are idyllic! (I am still between marriages but that is another story ) Sustrans have a lot of decent cycle paths. One runs along an old railway track between Bristol and Bath. Flat and easy, and you finish up smack in the middle of Bath. The real bonus is, there are several pubs on the way.
