None, there was no such thing Rationing was so tight you ate every crumb of food served, proper food There were substitutes such as egg powder but junk food was unheard of. Desperate Dan ate his "bully beef but we had no idea what that was

My dad used to put sugar on his salad. Yorkshire dressing from the 40s. have always put sugar on salad cream on lettuce. Never knew why until I took my fiancé to met the family with whom we were evacuated. A salad was served for tea and the good lady had some salad cream with sugar The original sweet and sour

It does seem like a war time/post war austerity treat.
I do like salad cream though, sometimes - salad cream and tomato sandwiches, on white bread. I don't see it as a cheap substitute for mayonnaise - and its no good for that - but as something in itself.

Now for me the sliced tomato in white bread sandwich has to be covered in just salt Our tomatoes in the greenhouse are progressing nicely, and must be near turning red - can't wait

I like simplicity in food I shouldn't have looked into this thread ... it has primed my tasty food gene. I'd better go out and buy a can od Condensed Milk and a loaf of Co-oP Bread and make a sandwich (or two)

I read George MacDonald Fraser's (the Flashman bloke) war memoir - can't remember the title - and he mentions that a lot - first thing they do whenever they stopped would be to make an urn of tea and sweeten it with condensed milk. It sounded so good I got some myself and tried it.
God though, it was manky. 😸😸
