Isn't it stupid to believe if you put new shoes on the table , you'll have bad luck , etc.

Yes, but it's daft to put shoes on a table anyway.

Thinking you can affect outside forces through superstitious ritual is silly, but as a way of calming yourself, a pre-event set of things to do, it probably works as a type of meditation - putting your left sock on first, that kind of thing. I have a lot of things I like to do and don't feel right if I don't do them, just as I have things that could be called fetish objects - yes, and stop it right now - a container with a picture of Bach on it for keeping Fisherman's Friends in, a cigarette box where a wooden bird retrieves the cigarettes for you (or rather, it doesn't, at least not with roll-ups), even books that I have never read and will never read but will not get rid of, a knife I used to use for work, a 40 year old Fall badge. Some of these are more important than others, but I do have to keep them all.

Remember when we used to be told if you pulled a face and the wind changed you'd stay like that.

We used to have a book about Leeds United in which David Harvey said that his superstition was sticking to the same glass all night. We (me and my brother) thought that was daft: what if you started with a beer and then wanted some whisky and then some wine - what then? You'd look pretty silly, is what.*
The same book said that each player started their day with a bowl of shredded wheat, and we thought that was pretty silly as well. Maybe if the book had been sponsored by Kellogg and not Nabisco it would have been more believable.

Isn't that OCD or whatever it is called rather than superstition or even just routine Look at Nadal's routine before he even hits the ball, must be so annoying for his opponents
