Well that was entertaining and mind boggling. Just for the record, I drank Ovaltine for years and never woke up gay.

Only to be used on a Psychopath....... (gulp) £29 15, bob in 1896 ? So how many hours of work would someone earn that much? If they had to eat, put a roof over their heads, etc., How many years would it take to own a bike? ... and would they be able to getr one before Cars were invented

In 1959, my dad bought me a Palm Beach Tourist bike. It was the love of my life at the time and it cost £29.99. My dad sent me to get it by myself and I had to tell the man that my dad said to put a bell on it.

It was the shear expense of £30 in 1896. I recall when I worked on about 1966 in the Production Engineer dept. One of "my elders" in the office was telling the story of an Uncle who was to be Married before the prise rises of The First war - (about 1912 if memory serves) Had £40 saved for his wedding, but instead "spent" the money at some event in Epson? ?? My other elders did not believe that a Farm Labourer could not have possibly earn, or even seen, such a large amount of £40, and some exageration had occurred... I find it very difficult to assess value in earlier years. For the record... My Wage (1st yr apprentice) in 1959 was £Nill - One shilling - and one and a half Pence per hour x 42.5 hours per week....
