The thing is with Gay is that it's never been a totally innocent word.
Asking a woman if she was gay from at least the mid Victorian period onwards meant, did she provide sexual services; so a Gay Girl was a sex worker, and - later on, I think from the 1920s - so was a Gay Boy.
It was a kind of semi-secret code, so that Gay could be used by people who didn't understand the other meaning; but also by people who did understand it and pretended not to.
