I have watched The Go Between several times,it is a classic. Sadly, with Ultra HD,the quality of the old films is very poor. They look a bit fuzzy. I don't mind it myself, but my family have no patience with less than perfect clarity.

I watched again The Go-Between last night and enjoyed it. Tonight I shall watch Dulcima. I love this film although I feel a little bit uncomfortable about it - you know, older man plus younger woman. And the ending is sad. Poor John Mills is driven to madness that he is losing his young woman. Just out of interest, I looked up the female equivalent of virile (which is what John Mills isn't but Carol White is in the film!), and came up with Muliebrity. I have never seen this word before!

I used to love "The Road" films with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.Recently I watched one of these films and found it dated. It just didn't seem nearly so funny. Some films stand the test of time and some don't.

Althea, when my brother and I were young, we loved the ROAD films. We would watch them on television -The Saturday Matinee usually. We also always looked out for, amongst the many, films such as Going My Way with Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald , and The Bells of St. Mary's with Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman.
Earlier this evening I watched Other Men - a public information film about road safety. I think it was called Other Men! The little children stole the show. One classroom scene reminded me so much of my little primary school. I loved playing in the Wendy House.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire is a great film - I thought it would be like The Night of the Big Heat or something like that, but it's really well done, and really well thought out.
Leo Mckern is pretty much the star of it - I know there's a hero with a bigger role, but Leo gets all the best lines - and the editor of the Daily Express plays himself - a bit stiffly (I've just thought he was probably too restricted in the language he could use) but reasonably well.
But anyway, I watched it a few weeks ago and it is very worth seeing.

I quite like the short drama Shadows. I had never seen or heard of it before. It is so dated but the few I have recently watched have been enjoyable. The special effects remind me of a favourite series for children - The Box of Delights with Patrick Troughton and Devin Stanfield. My daughter and I used to watch it together years ago. There is something about the likes of The Box of Delights and Shadows that gives me a strange but nice feeling - probably a reminder of the happy past.

There's the texture of the film/video used, the way it's directed, the style of the sets and the acting, even the actors' accents - things you don't notice at the time because everything was like that - but do 20-30 years later.
I watched the Waiting Room with Jenny Agutter on Youtube a few weeks ago - pretty bad quality reproduction but still good.
I will try to get to see Box of Delights (I have the TV tie-in edition of the novel, by John Masefield, or I did). There are others that are sometimes on Youtube, in better versions - The Enchanted Castle, Escape into Night, Kizzy, Tom's Midnight Garden, Carrie's War - all good stuff, and all with that texture.
