Cockroaches...they give me the hebbiejebbies. I had a friend, who was a chef at the Savoy, back when I was young. I finished early mornings on Fleet Street and he was on early shift at the hotel. We went down to the kitchen ,where he was first in. There was a portal window,in the door. He sneaked the door open and pulled on the light switch. We watched as the sea of coackroaches disappeared......

Presenters who put me off the programme they present. Exactly. Paul Martin ( Flog It) ..... treats people like kids. everything he says is sound bite. ........Jeremy Vine (Eggheads) ..... sycophant. self-important. Add to that the man who does the boring voice-over on 'Money For Nothing'. Why are these people even there?

My father who was an interior decorator, many moons ago, was working at the Savoy over night, as was the practice at the time in places like that (less disruptive) and had occasion to visit the kitchens one night. What he saw there put him off eating out for a long time. " If that can happen at the Savoy, it could happen anywhere". Cockroaches it seems, were everywhere.

Orwell said something like, The more classy a restaurant looks from the outside, the dirtier its kitchens will be. (From his experience of working as a Pot-boy (or something like that) in a classy-ish place in Paris.)

At the time he was probably right. Let's hope all has changed now.

It's this: the whole thing is worth reading, but this is a good bit: Obviously, this was in the 30s, and everything has changed now

Oh dear! One wonders how anyone survived. And yes, it was in the 30s that my father was working too, so let's hope so.

In Wales we have had a ratings system for a few years now. They are about to implement this in England I believe.
It does shame those that are not as hygienic as they could be. 5 being spotless and 0 meaning they have to clean up their act immediately.

Someone once said (erroneously I think) that if we had a nuclear war the only survivors would be cockroaches.

All of Orwell's books disturbed me a great deal. Even Keep the Aspidistra Flying. I think that means he was a brilliant writer.

I want to put fruit that never ripens into room 101. I mean fruit you buy ,that looks wonderful, but is not quite ripe. Then instead of ripening it just rots in the bowl. Hmph!
