Are they definitely writing Brian out of it? Is there going to be a newby tonight? Will the demise of Brian signal the end?

Hey Arena. I love New Tricks, and have the DVDs of series of series 1-9 (where Jack leaves and the Scots geezer - nuthen wrong with that! - takes his place). That's where the rot set in, I fear. I'd heard or read somewhere that both Brian and Sandra would be leaving soon, which leaves only Gerry of the originals. I reckon it's time to wrap it up. It's sad; in its prime this was an excellent series, maybe surprisingly since it featured characters well into their middle age - and who wants to see that these days? Apart from viewers well into their middle age, of course. But without 3/4 of the original cast I think it'll just be a sad and embarrassing ghost. I reckon the success of the series was down to the extraordinarily good interplay between the original characters, and I don't think the producers'll be able to replicate that, no matter what other old farts they might dig up. I dunno, maybe if they could interest Dame Judi and Geoffrey Palmer, and maybe Christopher Ellison, it might work again, but I'm pessimistic. Fortunately I have still have me DVDs to remind me of the happy days.

Hey Sand Just watching the latest ep of this on ABC - I think we're up to the 5th or 6th of this series. So as well as the Scots geezer we have Del Boy, clearly meant to be the replacement for Jack - good experienced ex-copper with a Secret Sorrow: for Jack the death of his wife Mary; for Del Boy the fact he has a disabled daughter. I have to return to my previous opinion: this was a fabulous show; now it's just boring rubbish. The beeb or whoever it is should piss it off; this series has lost everything that made it great. I won't be bothering again. Bloody hell, even Gerry's just a boring old fart in a raincoat these days. It really has lost it. Thank God for DVDs: I can still enjoy the real New Tricks.

What do you think? Has it gone down the pan? No, I don't think so. Nicholas Lyndhurst's character is interesting (better than I expected, to be honest) and what we have seen of Tamzin Outhwaite looks promising. It all depends on the writers, really. The first episode in next year's series is entitled Bermondsey Boy.
