Sorry but I fail to see why the ceremony to commemorate those who died at Passchendaele can, even remotely, spark an exchange about Brexit.

There are some spoiling for a Brexit fight even if you are talking about the weather Maris It has a designated thread specifically for the purpose. I do go there and know what I'm in for. But Passchendaele... (God rest their souls) - give me a break.

I agree Maris. I first saw that are in 1958 around 40 years after ww1. There were areas where nothing could grow and some locals were still making a living selling scrap they were pulling out of the woods. It was not the sanitised battle fields that now attract visitors. Some of the graveyards seemed to cover square miles. It has left a lasting impression on my soul
I would dedicate a place in one of those cemeteries as neutral ground and make that the place all peace treaties were signed. Why? Because when they looked around they would see the price of failure
Now I will finish my pint and try and think of sunny days

I think it was just in response to those who think they can carry on and easily attend future ceremonies by popping over there as we can whilst we are still in the EU Some seem to have a blinkered approach to the reality of the situation

Watching the concert at Ypres and the ceremony today there were a lot of ex service people and relatives there who I'm sure would have appreciated some of the wartime music, some of those old songs. Alfie Boe has for example done "We'll Meet Again", I bet the audience would have preferred that to the song he sang

I apologise for the brevity of last nights post as I was on my phone, but I have been travelling through and around Europe since I was in my teens, initially with just me and a rucksack. I never ever had any problems crossing borders, never had to apply for a visa, it was pretty much the same as it is now.

As I posted earlier, you would have fun at Alicante airport now with your rucksack It amazes me, the thoughts of Brexiteers who seem to think that the EU will now welcome them with open arms, they will be desperate for our trade, share intelligence and defence, and so on As David Davies has already found out, they will not and will treat us like the isolationists that Leavers have dragged us into Never mind, we will have a trade deal with America and welcome Trumps poisoned chickens

I don't think the troops on the beaches in Normandy had visas Bryan. And although I am pacifist but for them I doubt very much Europe as we know it today would exist.
The problems you have experienced at Alicante are I suspect the result of terrorist threats, whether real or imagined.
If you want to really go through the mill wait until you fly to Israel, or indeed the US.

I quoted Alicante because of our own experience but I understand that there are now problems and delays elsewhere. Had we joined Schengen then there would be no borders but they are putting up the barriers against the UK I don't think the beaches of Normandy were part of the EU, and are irrelevant As for Israel and the USA, they are a red herring. Brexit is nothing to do with them
