Rick Stein's Weekend trips programme tonight was in Portugal, and he went to see the sea castle in Lisbon that Jess Franco used as a dream home for the heroine in Necronomicon:

I didn't want to start a new thread, but anyway. There was a thing about Stein being the new Alan Partridge in the Guardian, and it's true: Last night he was in a bar where a woman was singing mournful Portuguese folk music (called fado, I think), and after describing it for a while, said something about the people who really know it are like those who laugh loudly at the jokes in Shakespeare: which I thought was really insulting, especially to the people who were actually playing it. It's odd, because he also seemed to be enjoying it as well. I like him though: he doesn't mind looking a prat. This is the Guardian piece.I think the Copenhagen programme is on tonight.

Have watched all of them and yes, it can make you squirm at times as he blunders round the town making gaff after gaff! He loves food, fish and people but that aside, his ignorance on occasion is amazing 😨 Did you see Reykjavik? I never want to eat there!

He's so human. He wouldn't know how to be a smoothy but his passion for food negates his naivety.

His passion for eating worms he finds on the beach as well. It really tastes of the sea! - what else would it taste of? Apart from worm, and sand.

And thinking of 'It tastes like the sea', NOTHING from any fancy restaurant will equal a small fire on the beach, some seaweed on top, some mussels just picked at low tide, more seaweed on top and a few minutes to let that all steam until the mussels are open, eaten with some fresh bread and a glass or two of wine you have cooled in the sea.

Sounds like a great memory. Anything you catch and eat is fabulous... it's the freshness that astounds your taste buds 😄

I just threw up in my mouth a little there.
(Well, I might have done.)

Watched Bologna today on catchup. Ricks Italian was excruciating ...been there a couple of times to stuff ourselves silly 😄 We went to a number of restaurants where they didn't even have a menu...just what was good and on offer that day. Great!
