This is, I feel, at the heart of the housing crisis. The fact that council estates are now largely owned by landlords renting to those who cannot afford to buy, shows the massive need for social housing. I always was opposed to the sale of council houses.
I am also opposed to the provision of buy to let mortgages...how immoral is that? To make money out of the poor bu..ers who not only pay his mortgage and more... but he sits on property/ies that are increasing in value faster than ever. Win win for him...lose lose for the tenant. It all went belly up when people starting buying homes for investment rather than a place to live and this continues to proliferate because it benefits estate agents, banks and property investors, who now control the market.
We could've had a portfolio of properties (disgusting term) but conscience would never allow us to be part of this problem.
Not many things make me more angry than this.

She found herself a new partner and moved in with him, took out one of these mortgages, bought her ex husband out, and now lets her former place out until the market improves when she will finally sell it I supported the Thatcher sell off to sitting tenants, it removed the maintenance burden from the LA and allowed the tenant to take pride in owning their home We watched a George Gently episode last night which was about T Dan Smith clearing the old terraced houses out in Newcastle and replacing them with high rise flats (remember the scandals, Poulson etc). I said at the time it would be better to sell these houses to the sitting tenants for a nominal £1. I bet the outcome would be far better

I don't think you need to own your home to feel a pride in it; we live in a council flat and I love it; I like it when people come here and see it. What causes a lack of pride is uncertainly - if you don't know if you're going to be able to stay in your flat you have no reason to put any investment (emotional, financial) into it. If we'd got this place on a temporary tenancy (as has been suggested for new council tenancies) we wouldn't have bothered to do much to it - decoration, etc; also, if that is introduced the estate will gradually become temporary as well - no one will know who their neighbours are, there'll be no cohesion; which is, presumably, what the Tories want. |

It should be quite simple, do not allow Private Landlords to charge say 10% more than the equivalent social housing rent per council region e.g. two bed council house in Sometown £300 per month, Private Landlord £330 per month or even 10% less if they are renting to people on benefits (the taxation system should not support private individuals to become rich). Pass legislation so that all Private Landlord Properties must be maintained to the standard of social housing and an anonymous complaints reporting system checked by an Inspection System with proper enforcement regulations. Allow tenancies to pass down through families, provide secure tenancies etc. It all happens in Germany and other places and I know that the corrupt can always get around it but not as often as they do now if a proper inspection system was in place. Build decent hostels with a variety of room sizes for those people evicted from either form of housing, the homeless, the unemployed etc. to either help them get back on their feet or in cases where they won't (and we have to be honest here some people will not), places where they can permanently stay and claim minimum housing benefit for such. It used to be the case that a private landlord wouldn't touch you unless you were working and had a reference from work but now so many cash in on the Housing Benefit they receive and councils have been forced to accept the rents they charge as there is nowhere else for these people to live because nobody built any social housing. Bedsits when properly designed have a place for low waged single people but to be registered all should have private en suite toilets and showers, make it the case and pass a law. Make being a Private Landlord a long term investment rather than a fast buck, a role where modest regular profit from rentals providers an income but do not allow a modest sized house to become an 8 person dwelling. I saw one recently where the landlord had put sheds in the garden and was renting these as two person accommodation - no facilities other than those in the house where 10 people were already sharing one toilet and one sink. Appalling and the council knew about it and said it "was working with the landlord to improve things", they should have been "working with the police to ensure a conviction"!!! |
