How is it that most of you say walking helps you get rid of the pain? If I walk I have pain which takes ages to clear up - sometimes into the next day, or even the day after . Exercise is good for you! OK, I know that, but what do you do if you get more and more pain by doing it?

Best doctor I ever had, sadly now retired, when confronted by patients complaining of headaches (once satisfied nothing serious) would advise an hours walk amidst the beautiful scenery here I tend to follow this advice as I hate taking any medication, I believe the body heals itself. Yes, sometimes it is difficult to get going as I have arthritis but I just force myself on, similar to an athlete going through the pain barrier Always works and feels good afterwards, nothing terribly strenuous- just an hour max. I remember the old fashioned ward sisters who would get her patients out in the fresh air, well wrapped up of course, in all weathers no matter how cold. Maybe the fresh air has it's benefits

There's a photo in St Thomas's of a bunch of TB patients, in the 30s maybe the 50s, all sitting on the terrace overlooking the Houses of Parliament, everyone of them wrapped up to buggery. It looks a nasty day in the photo as well...
Actually, I've found it, and I remembered it wrong: they're all in bed, and not that wrapped up. But it still looks a nasty day, though that could be the way the photo was developed.
It won't reproduce here, but if you want to see it google (images) St Thomas's TB patients and it will appear there.

I love walking in the many parks in my city, But I have asthma and COPD. I soon get breathless so I am restricted to how far I can go. It's a real b-gger.

Yesterday I forced myself to go for a walk and after the first half a mile or so enjoyed it. After about three weeks of doing sod all it was hard work, but I met the gamekeeper who was both very friendly and informative. He cheated, he was on a quad bike. One thing that was interesting is I have a 'App' on my phone called 'Moves'. It tells you how far you have gone and will even give you a little map (its free!). when I looked at it last night I realised I had stopped about every five minutes, ostensibly to look at the view or light my pipe, but in reality because that was about as much as the old bones would take on their first real outing for a while.

You have to work up to the walks Jimshoo, and not over do it at first. I'm on a lot of pain killers for various things but if I stop moving completely the pain is gone until I get up off the chair then its much worse. However if I go out walking at a moderate pace, I'm in pain, but actually its a better pain that eases off as I move more. If I over do it though, I can't move much the next day and I'm in even more pain than before I start. The key is to work up to the length of walk. Hope that helps.
