He is a clever man, but it seems not as clever as he imagines He exhibits a quite transparent duplicity over his ‘demands’ that the EU reforms itself to his liking.
We all know (he has openly said so) that he would prefer to stay in the EU and his gentle requests (for that is the what they are rather than hard-negotiating ‘demands) are merely a ‘tag wrestling match’ with no substance that is intended to fool the audience that it is 'real' public entertainment.
He seems to imagine that this charade will persuade the British people to his side, so that when he announces his ‘outstanding negotiated success with the EU', and then commences his campaign to Stay In, we will somehow be hoodwinked and docilely accept the word of the Great Man
Therein lies his Vanity
The British people are not generally stupid and know when they are being sold a pup

If he is such a clever man, why is he urging membership of the EU?

I don't think it is Cameron's arrogance, we in France are bombarded with news of French and German leaders boasting about how they are te most important nations in the EU. I believe the UK has an important role to play in balancing this!!.
