He is appalled at the ‘shocking’ inequality in Britain and how the poor in our society are condemned to live ‘shorter, meaner lives’ Well Major, 150 years ago the levels of economic inequality in Britain was truly shocking, and the poor most certainly did lead short and mean lives, but that is not true today Today the levels of inequality are no greater than they were perhaps 10, 20 or 50 years ago, (and substantially less than was the case 150 years ago) and that standards of living and health of the poor has steadily improved over the same period

You know as well as anyone else that economic inequality is absolutely necessary to the well-being of our Nation and that we should celebrate economic inequality as a symptom ad cause our economic well-being
