I really don't know. According to what I saw he did leave where he said he left from on that date. My dad was at sea and told me of a japanese fisherman who was picked up some 8 months after being adrift.
I read a very interesting book by Bombard, the man who invented the Bombard boat. In it he described a shipwreck in the Med. Many people died in the boats or on liferafts. However he said that in that climate and under those conditions no-one would have died of hunger or thirst in that time. I think they were found with about a week. Some had died within the first three or four days.
He concluded that most had died of fear! So maybe our 13 months adrift sailor had an iron will to survive. But I think after a while I might have been tempted to slip over the side.
