The full title ought to be "Retailers, damned retailers and PC World".
A sudden need arose this week. A Kensington lock, to secure my laptop to furniture in a public area. Being in the centre of Bristol I wandered the shops.
PC World offered me a Kensington lock at £40 with no cheaper alternative in the store.
Disgusted with the bare-faced profiteering, I walked 100 yards to the most expensive shop I can think of that's not actually located on New Bond Street. The Apple store. I was obsequiously door-greeted, passed to an assistant, invited to ascend the glass stairs to the Retail Sanctum, re-greeted and passed to yet another assistant who knew everything there is to know about Kensington locks. I allowed him to sell me his £25 model.
The sooner PC World joins Comet and Dixons on the scrap-pile of failed retailer outlets the better.
eBay has functionally identical Kensington locks for £1.75 with free delivery. I may buy a half dozen for future eventualities and to work off a little more steam. I may even take several into PC World and hang them on their Kensington lock pegs with tags saying "please take this free gift courtesy of a disgusted non-customer".
Bah.

If you know exactly what it is that you're after, and are prepared to shop around online, it can be considerably cheaper to buy items online. For example - my hobby is keeping tropical fish, and whereas there's a shop with excellent customer service near my home, it really does work out cheaper to buy my filter spare parts and fish food online (from good old E-bay).
But for certain items, such as live fish and plants, it's best to go to the shop & see what it is exactly that I'm buying. This is where the need is for customer service; which of course has to be paid for in the form of higher prices for any purchases.
