The forgot to add Hepworths. My first flat above Boots in a town centre in the Midlands where we shared a common side entrance with Hepworths. Their manager recruited me to model their clothes at fashion shows (in my prime people mistook me for Con Cluskey the Batchelors lead singer) I was personally dressed by Austin Reed, shopped at Woolworths mainly for records, Comet for TVs and computers. I remember Fine Fare opening, I think owned by a biscuit magnate, with my mother's "won't" last prediction. C&A are still going strong in The Netherlands but oh so very expensive

British Home Stores went fairly recently and I used to like their clothes.

Gone: Macfisheries, Homebase Oh Macfisheries. Tons of fish laid out on open front shops, surrounded by lots of ice and giving one that salty whiff of the sea as you passed by. Happy days

I have a memory of Macfisheries that I still wince about. One day I took my two small daughters to town on the bus. They were on reins, which meant they could walk about a bit but not go farther than a couple of feet from me. I had dressed them up in matching outfits and they looked a picture.(Even though I says it, as shouldn't. an expression of my Nan's) We went into Macfisheries and as I was buying some fruit, they crawled about on the floor near the potatoes. When I looked down at them, they were filthy.I had to finish the shopping with them in that awful state. It turned what should have been a nice day out into an ordeal.

I regularly buy from M&S, as you say their food is excellent. I love their fish and wouldn't buy it from anywhere else. Their clothing has gone down though, last year I bought some jeans for £65 and the first time we washed them they were awful. Poor quality and over priced. I would rather buy from Matalan now.

I am surprised about that. The one clothing item I used to buy from M&S were jeans, because they had the "long" option (I have long legs), and they had the "stretch" option. Haven't bought any from them in a long time though. I usually wear Red Herring or Gerry Weber. I like those the best. L L Beans are great for jeans.

Since then I have bought cheap jeans from Asda and Matalan and the are excellent compared to the M&S ones.

I have bought clothes from M&S for years. In fact,I used to buy school uniforms for my children from there. They were the only brand that survived the rough treatment uniforms get. I have noticed, for the past few years, that the quality is not as good as it was. I have Tshirts from about five years ago which still look like new.Other more recent ones are beginning to look worn already. When I can get to the foodhall,I stock up on all of our favourites because the quality is still good in the food. Also,I can never resist a bargain,so I go for the 3 for 2 offers. I want a new pair of jeans and all the jeans in M&S seem to be tight legged.I want boot cut, heavy denim that come up to the waist. They are in short supply in the shops now.

Oh I do so much agree. I hate them skinny jeans and they barely cover your bum these days. The food is great, I love there "best ever" beef burgers and the fish are terrific. My wife is a veggie so tend to buy things for one in the meat department. Their ready meals are dear but very good too. They have a bakery in our M&S and the brad and scones are lovely.
