www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/magazine-42110267/the-man-prepared-to-go-to-prison-to-save-sheffield-s-treesI can understand this man considering such drastic action in an attempt to stop the LA steamroller Where I live a perfectly acceptable dual carriageway has been ripped apart to now provide a single carriageway, with the obligatory cycle lane of course, plus endless new traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. Why? Nobody asked for this, it is typical that Joe Citizen feels so powerless against the LA machinery which seems unstoppable. The cycle lane is necessary so that funding for the whole scheme will flow from the EU

People have asked for cycling lanes though, and for years.
A lot of the problem with Sheffield is a secret PFI contract. It is cheaper for the company with the contract to plant new trees than maintain old ones.

Very few cyclists here except for the few you see out and about on Sundays complete with all the Tour de France gear having their weekly exercise Our Councillor responsible for traffic does not drive and wants everybody to use buses and the train. Fine except they don't go anywhere near to where people want to go and anyway who wants to hang around hoping that a bus will turn up. If we have to go to the city, or hospital, we always use the Park'nRide simply because it's cheaper than parking the car

I love buses; the fault with them is that there are not enough of them, and that they - away from London anyway - cost too much: both a result of deliberate Govt policy.
It might be nice if you have a choice to drive, but you're forgetting all those people who don't have that choice.
Cycle lanes are meant to encourage cycling: more people take it up when it's easier and safer. London would be a much better place without private cars.
