...and they got away with it. UK says sorry for drowning of Iraqi boy forced into canal by British soldiers
THE UK MINISTRY of Defence has apologised for the 2003 death of an Iraqi teen who drowned after being forced into a canal by four British soldiers.
Officials said the department is “extremely sorry” for the death of 15-year-old Ahmad Jabbar Kareem Ali, who had been taken into custody by British forces on suspicion of looting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.
An independent inquiry into the death led by a former High Court judge said the soldiers’ failure to help the boy after he started to drown was the “certain” cause of his death. He did not know how to swim.
The soldiers were tried in a British court for manslaughter and were acquitted in 2006.www.thejournal.ie/uk-sorry-iraqi-boy-drowning-2982748-Sep2016/

There are rules against killing prisoners, even in war. Four grown men against a 15 year old boy.

I'm guessing that you have no experience of warfareHe was taken into custody suspected of looting....fair enough. The next step should have been jail. So where does being 'forced' into a canal, left to die, come into it? Nothing to do with warfare, more to do with four bullies doing exactly what they wanted. I wonder if they are still serving? A disgrace if they are.

If the courts are going to look at every incident that has happened in warfare, where would it end Churchill, Eden, Thatcher, Blair, Cameron have all committed us to action somewhere. Would they be dragged before the courts, or their generals who gave the commands, or the squaddies who carried out those commands I have no doubt that similar incidents to this one happened, the peaceniks screamed when Thatcher sank the Belgrano but forgot that lives were saved IMO Best forgotten and not looked into, just rejoice in the victories

With justice being done...albeit it a little late. We just can't have our soldiers behaving in such abhorrent ways.

They are not missionaries out to convert the heathen to Christianity We can all sit in our cosy armchairs and criticise, safe and secure because of all our servicemen. We should be grateful and support them There is a marine currently in jail because he was convicted of murdering an Iraqi. Another victory for the libertarians but not a good omen

The training is supposed to prevent stuff like that; you'd expect it if they weren't trained.

Armed combat is very different to supposed soldiers taking a fifteen year old boy and forcing him into a river and leaving him there to die. If you're happy to let supposed soldiers behave in that way that is up to you It is certainly not the way I hope and expect our boys to act whilst on active service.
