I am with you Hild and Althea. Must be particularly galling for Hild, having a son with disabilities, obliged to fund so much himself. As you say, these people believe they have saved up their own personal pot, rather than contributed to a national system. The instances you relate seem to reflect a very common attitude. In fact, we read an on- board magazine on the ferry, the last section of which was full of advice for ex-pats on how to work the system and stay within the law, plus cheap courier ads for getting your stuff to/from UK. All this and their utter disdain for their 'hosts'. A number of my own friends lived in France and Italy for years, but you're right, when a partner dies or an illness befalls, back they come! Not one has stayed abroad. So I, who has worked here all my life in lowly paid work, health care looking after others, and paid NI and taxes who now wishes to sell up and move to Spain should forgo all benefits in the UK. Spain has a supposed agreement with the UK that pensioners health care will be provided free of charge whilst the costs are recovered from the NHS. In fact the Spanish are so strapped for cash and tired of waiting for the NHS bureaucracy to repay them, they are demanding cash on the spot for treatment. They are even taking the same attitude to the EH1C NHS holiday treatment card Why should I forfeit my entitlement. Where your argument falls of course is if I stay here I will avail myself of all the benefits so what is the difference if my bed is in sunny Spain or the UK. I suspect there is a little jealousy around here It is a pity that Hild is not getting sufficient benefits for her son, but that is a separate issue
Why would you move somewhere you can't afford to live, the sun would soon become boring when you couldn't afford to eat. The money you paid in taxes and NI was not just for you it was for everyone, so that everyone benefits. If as you say you have not earned a lot of money, how do you think you will be able to afford to live on only a state pension in Spain. They will give you nothing more, you won't qualify for social security payments out there because they are virtually non existent. If you stay here, your taxes, my taxes and everyone else's taxes will provide you with Pensioner Credit, Housing Benefit, free prescriptions, free glasses, free dental treatment and free bus passes and every other free thing pensioners are entitled to. If you do not own your own property or have sizeable savings and assets you will also get free care and support when you require it as you age. This is because everyone paid into the same pot so that you who has dedicated your life to health care and not earned a great deal of money can benefit. You may not be rolling in it but it is their for you if you need it.
By the way I did not say that my son doesn't get enough benefits, I said the contribution he pays for his care in relation to the 13 hours he receives is too high. It leaves him with less than £20 per week for everything else he needs. I work full time and probably will until I drop because I cannot afford to retire. That is life and I am not jealous of anyone, we have great laughs and great fun but sometimes the budget is stretched to snapping point and we live on pasta until pay day.... but we even find we can laugh about that e.g. is it pasta or rice tonight, let's live it large and have couscous!! We don't think anyone owes us a living, we are just poor.
By they way I have lived in Spain and France and wouldn't move to either when I am a pensioner. If you do decide to move to Spain when you retire, good luck, but yes if you go to live in another country you should forgo benefits (other than state pension) available to you here, that's the way it is. Anyway I think we all know that it is not poor pensioners that are moving to Spain.

The topic is nothing to do with how I would manage to live whilst living in Spain, it is about my entitlement to return to the UK for health care If you say that your son has to live on less than £20 a week to live on, and you have to live on pasta til payday it seems to me that he doesn't get enough benefits

You do have the entitlement to return to the UK for healthcare if you return to live here, then you share in the pot we all share. If you become a resident abroad you don't have that right as was pointed out to my sister who still lives in Spain and came back for a couple of months. She was unwell and managed to see a temporary GP here who told her he could not refer her for investigations because she was no longer permanently resident in this country. She could attend a walk-in centre or A&E and get temporary care, which she did. As to my son's benefits, he gets what he is entitled to, it is the local council that takes the contribution back off him towards his care that causes the problem. I get what I am paid and we represent the working poor of this country and there are millions of us, you also described yourself as low waged and I therefore presumed you fell into this category too.

Many of those who move to Spain,do so very carefully to ensure they spend the requisite amount of time in the UK (often with relatives) to ensure they can 'get the best of both worlds' or some might say 'have their cake and eat it' ! Let's face it, it's all within the law...
But then so is...
-stashing your dosh off shore (David Cameron, Lewis Hamilton, Jimmy Carr et all) -Philip Green selling off BHS for a quid, knowing those employees will suffer, while enjoying his yacht in Monaco -MPs trousering massive expenses etc etc etc
Nothing illegal...but it does not stop people having an opinion of these things...
