I don't know about anyone else but the more I read/see/listen to, the more I think it's been sheer madness on the part of Cameron to hold this referendum. I also believed (daftly as it's turned out) that whatever the result, we would, as a country, say "Right..." and get on with it. That was certainly what I was prepared for. How wrong could I be? I'm always interested in politics but I'm getting sick of this...particularly the acrimony between sides, never mind the limbo we are now in. I agree with you on this, all of it.

Where shall we house the (nearly) 5 million Brits, who may be sent home?

Where shall we house the (nearly) 5 million Brits, who may be sent home? Well, if the betting odds are right, you may have to be asking Theresa May, very nicely!

That doesn't answer the question.

That doesn't answer the question. My guess is that May is keeping her powder dry and these expats will be a tool to bargain with. Housing? Well, who do you want to blame for the shortage...personally I would go back to Thatcher and sale of council houses...which ironically, in many areas, are now owned by buy-to-let landlords who rent them for profit to people who can't get social housing!

Does anyone really imagine that ex-pats in Europe will be told to get out? McGabe did that in Uganda. Of course they won't and neither will Europeans living here. People from Europe have lived in 'foreign' countries for generations and there has never been a problem. I would think the same rules will apply; if you are solvent without state aid you stay. If you have a job to go to, or come to, then you are free to take that job offer without restrictions. What might not be permitted is for people to come, or for that matter go into Europe speculatively. I do know that as things stand a person can come to England, register as self employed and immediately be able to claim benefits which are a lot higher than basic JSA. That is just wrong. A fair few Big Issue sellers take advantage of that.

From 1 January 2014, before you can claim income based Jobseeker’s Allowance you must have been living in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland for the three months immediately before making your claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance.
From 1 April 2014, EEA jobseekers will not be able to claim Housing Benefit (if you are already receiving income based Jobseeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit, this will not apply to you).

Honeybear. Your information may be more accurate than mine and I would not question what you have said. However that is JSA. What about the 'self employed' status and the benefits they can claim?

My information is on the government website for all to see and applies to all. Further: From 1 November 2014, EEA nationals with ‘jobseeker’ residency status will be able to claim income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance for a maximum of six months. EEA nationals with ‘retained worker’ residency status will be able to claim income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance for a maximum of nine months. Save
