Well somebody had to start a thread on this, so why not me!
I know it won't happen but what is needed is the truth from both sides. I would vote for independence if I had a vote. Living in France means I don't have a vote but independence would see me seriously thinking of moving 'home' to Scotland.

Why do you think it's a good idea for Scotland to become independent starlilolill?

I just feel Scotland would be better off being run by Scots for Scots! I have been disillusioned by the Westminster crew for a long time - all parties I'm afraid. I have always regarded myself as a socialist, that doesn't mean I support Labour by the way, it's a long time since they have been socialists! I could go on but I'll not bore you just to add financially a viable proposition IMHO.

For a while, all the Scots were down south leading the UK. I'm not sure that Scotland would be financially viable were she to go alone. If Scotland does go alone I think that a lot of what residents of Scotland receive now cannot be sustained, there is not enough money to go round. As a family (and it has been discussed avidly) we hope that Scotland is better together and doesn't become independent.

norty - each to their own views and they are all valid. What makes you think there isn't enough money to go around? I believe an independent Scotland would see more investment than at present, most of the investment in the UK does tend to sink southwards! I don't think there has been fairness shown to Sctland by Westminster for many years. Hoddles would back me on this of course and give you chapter and verse - I don't know if he is old enough to participate!

I agree with you here for sure. I don't think there has been fairness shown to Sctland by Westminster for many years. I'm not convinced that big investment will come to Scotland in the numbers that is needed to be sustainable to go alone. I think investors may be worried by what can be perceived as insular thinking, something that I come across daily. Scotland is a great place to live and work, the school system is good and the people are warm and friendly (mostly) but there is a negativity about success that comes through which could be construed as parochial and narrow minded. I live in Aberdeenshire, so oil is a big employer here in both oil companies and it's service industries that are associated with the oil industry- the changes and movement of people in and out this area does wonders for the house prices and the wages here are well above average. Its a mini micro climate that I don't believe can become Scotland wide. If you can convince me it could then I would welcome it.

I don't think there has been fairness shown to Sctland by Westminster for many years. Hoddles would back me on this of course and give you chapter and verse - I don't know if he is old enough to participate! Oh, I'm plenty old enough. At the moment Scotland contributes 9.9% of all UK revenues yet , total public sector expenditure for the benefit of Scotland is the equivalent to 9.3% of total UK public sector expenditure. After independence there will be more money to go around, not less. www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2013/03/1859There are areas where spending in Scotland is well below Scotland's contribution - armed forces, the BBC, spending on the administration of government, spending on museums and galleries, for example. As for investment, Scotland will be capable of cutting corporation tax to attract inward investment. I don't understand the point about "insular thinking". A desire for independence within Europe is the precise opposite - the insularity with come from rUK which might well cut itself adrift from Europe.

Wild horses wouldn't drag me back. Cold days, when your innards fibulated to keep themselves warm. Horizontal icy rain ,blown by a northerly gale. I think I'll stay in the Perigord!

What next - independence for the Isle of Wight? UDI by Cornwall?
How much would it cost to put Hadrian's wall back in good shape?

I just wonder why the 'English' are so against Scottish Independence! They seem to believe that Scotland is a drain on the UK economy so surely they should be happier to get rid of this 'drain'!
