William Wilberforce (24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833) was a British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. A native of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780, eventually becoming the independent Member of Parliament for Yorkshire (1784–1812).

The great Gilli Smyth – one of the heroes of the counter culture and a key member of the amazing space rock far out and genuinely genius Gong has died.
Born on 1st June 1933 she performed with the bands Gong, Mother Gong and Planet Gong as well as releasing several solo albums and albums in collaboration with other members of Gong. In Gong, she often performed under the name Shakti Yoni contributing poems and space whispers.
Gilli co founded Gong with the late guitarist Daevid Allen and the band were one of the ultimate underground bands and all of the songs on the albums Magick Brother and Continental Circus are listed as written or co-written by her in a long and creative and fully artistic life.

Allan Pinkerton (25 August 1819 – 1 July 1884) was a Scottish American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton was born in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland, to William Pinkerton and his wife, Isobel McQueen, on August 25, 1819.

Dan Cruickshank (born 26 August 1949) is an art historian and BBC television presenter, with a special interest in the history of architecture. As a young child he lived for some years in Poland. His father was a journalist based in Warsaw. Cruickshank holds a BA in Art, Design and Architecture and was formerly a Visiting Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Sheffield

Norah Lofts, née Norah Ethel Robinson, (27th Aug.)was a 20th-century best-selling British author. She wrote more than fifty books specialising in historical fiction, but she also wrote non-fiction and short stories. Many of her novels, including her Suffolk Trilogy, follow the history of specific houses and their residents over several generations.

I once tried reading Gad's Hall but couldn't really get on with it.
At about the same time I tried Flashman's lady and also abandoned it, though now I think that's a great book. Maybe I ought to have another go at Norah (and because that was my grandmother's name).

Sir John Betjeman, CBE ( 28 August 1906 – 19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death. He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television.
