Well, as you may know, or as you may not know (who used to say that?) I am an Opera lover. At the moment I'm using Opera 12.15, and keeping an eye on the development of the re-written Opera 15, which is in development. They have gone over to the webkit rendering engine, as used in Chrome, and it's looking pretty good. Opera is my browser, my email agent, mr RSS feed reader - all in the one package. And it's European! (Norway) Opera invented Tabbed Browsing, Mouse Gestures, the Quick Dial screen...
And of course Chrome (which is Google's) is very popular, but I don't seem to find what I want in it. It certainly seem to be quick.

History lesson : the first really popular browser was called Netscape and it sold well. Then Microsoft copied it, and gave it away with their Windows operating system. Thus began the 'browser wars' -- we almost ended up with two internets - one for MSIE users and the other for the faithful fans of Netscape. Both sides started adding their own features, you see. One came out with the 'Blink' tag - using that caused what was in between to flash on and off on the screen - that got very old very quickly. The other side retaliated with the 'Marquee' tag - use that and you could make text slide across the screen (yawn)... Finally the Netscape people gave up, and evolved into Mozilla, with Firebird. Someone else was already using that name so they renamed their browser to Firefox.
Meantime, in Oslo some of the people who had invented the styling language used on web sites were making their own browser, called Opera. It was fast and took up very little space - in fact you could fit it on a floppy disk back then! It has grown a lot, and most of the things they invented have been copied by the other makers. Not being an American product, Opera has never had much notice in the US - most of its revenue comes from its use on smart phones. Its small percentage of the market still accounts for millions of users, world-wide.
