Well done Rory! I have known him all his life. His father Roy was a dear friend of ours. He would have been so proud of the little guy. I have never been a Dr.Who fan but I may have to watch it

There seems to be a difference of opinion at the Beeb, as to whether he's got the job.
We phoned Carmel (his Mum) but she's on the answerphone!

A big responsibility - I consider Doctor Who to be the only unmissable drama the BBC has.
Was there ever a proper inquiry into Roy K's death? Michael York was spitting tacks about it at the time, and blaming the producers for putting an inexperienced horseman through dangerous manoeuvres repeatedly - with that sad result.

I had dinner with Michael York, shortly after the tragedy. The producer had asked the actors Michael York/Ollie Reed/Frank Finlay and Roy to shoot a scene the stand-ins would have normally done but they were off filming elsewhere. It had been raining and the horses were shod with rainboots. The crew forgot to put the non-slip boots on Roy's horse. In the scene they all rode over a wooden bridge and turned sharp left. Roy was at the back , riding without spurs (clowning role) His horse slipped on the wooden bridge and he fell on his bum. He was sent to a nearby 'hospital'. It turned out to be a convent. He and Carmel were there for 24 hours before Michael came to visit. Roy had had no treatment and no one could speak English. He was beginning to experience abdominal pains and later died from a ruptured spleen. After much/long discourse, compensation was agreed. The money was used to start a home for handicapped children (he did a great deal of charity work for handicapped and disabled children, after his daughter Karina was born with cerebral palsy.) www.roykinnearhouse.co.uk/

Pleasure Scorps.
BTW Roy's funeral was attended by hundreds of stars. I was the only one there I'd never heard of!

I know that feeling!
I saw Roy K at the Theatre Workshop, Stratford East in Joan Littlewood's time - before he was known on TV - think the piece was called ^A Progress to the Park^. The only other member of the cast I can be sure of was John Junkin, although I think Billie Whitelaw was in it too - probably in 1959 or 60.

I expect Babs Windsor was in it too.
John J and Roy were big mates back then. Used to go to the studios in JJ's old Austin. The passenger door was tied over the top of the car (Roy told me) on to the driver's door and the only way out was if the driver released you!!

Them was the days... JJ used to come into the bandroom at the Talk of the Town to take advantage of the very cheap bars run by a couple of the guys in the Burt Rhodes Orch .Large Vodka and orange 40p... And we still went out to the pub in breaks...

Nottalotta people know that............
Progress to the Park ,was written by Alun Owen ,who later wrote Hard Day's Night for the Beatles. It was first produced at Theatre Royal Stratford, where No.2 son is in production team. Roy was fiercely Scottish, despite being born in Wigan. His dad played rugby for Scotland and British Lions. The Scotland Rugby League Student Player of the Year Award is named after him
