I have just read that they have done a 'who do you think you are' on Merle Oberon. It reveals that her father was a railwayman from Darlington and that her mother was the 12 year old daughter of his Indian girlfriend. Merle always claimed she was born in Tasmania and that her father was a high ranking army officer. She went to her grave believing her mother was her elder sister.

Does this: ...her father was a railwayman from Darlington and...her mother was the 12 year old daughter of his Indian girlfriend. mean the 12 year old daughter of his girlfriend was his (the railwayman's) daughter? If so, then her mother was her elder sister, surely. If that's the way it was, I quite understand why she claimed to come from Tassie.

No I just read it --- Oberon's mother was the 12 year old Indian girl. Darlington railwayman put her in the club, whilst living with 12 year olds Mum.

I am confused as well. Is it suggested that the railwayman inseminated his own 12 year old daughter, who was the 12 year old daughter of his Indian girlfriend, or did the Indian girlfriend come as a package with a daughter from a previous liaison?
