Anyone know anything about these? And there is of course a back story which I will tell.
I was done for speeding just before Christmas. 35 mph, which seems very harsh and I might just test the water with that one. I know radar guns are not very reliable unless they are dead steady, and it was a windy day, but I digress.
I have seen these advertised (I know they are illegal in France Arena) and wonder if they are worth having.
If I chose to simply pay up this time it is £100 fixed penalty, which is a lot of money. Not that I would ever think that speed traps are a cash cow. Obviously 35 on a quiet road is very dangerous!
So, my thinking is, although I don't drive like a nut is it worth investing perhaps £50-70 on one of those, purely in the interests of road safety, or would the bloody safety camera/gun have zapped me before the detector told me it was there?
Logic tells me that if they don't work then why are they banned in France, unless the French have less sophisticated detectors than here in the UK.

I was fined a few years back for exceeding a 30k limit. I was doing ......32kph.
(1) If I challenge the fine, I have to go to the other end of France to court.* (2) If I don't pay the fine within 30 days it is nearly doubled (3) If I lose my appeal I get a heavier fine and more points on my licence
Like all the others I paid up * Then each region had it's own number plate, so it was not difficult for the police to spot the strangers, when they checked the photos.........
As if they would!

Arena,
My sympathies. I am thinking of challenging this one. I do know that radar guns need a very stable platform otherwise they can throw errors, and it was a windy day if you get my drift. I will also claim that I knew the speed trap was in operation (true - I have a Police web site which tells me where they are) and so was being extra vigilant. Could be worth a pop.
I have challenged several parking fines in the past and have had a quite good hit rate. The last one was outside my daughters house in Twickenham when a Civil Enforcement Officer booked me while I was collecting my permit. I remember seeing his 'evidence', a picture of my car with my dog poking his head out of the window. 'He told me I was a liar' was part of his evidence. No I replied, I told him he was not telling the truth. That went on for 18 months with the 'fine' by then increased from £50 to £150, and I got a result when I started copying the mayor's office with the various e-mails.
They don't want any hastle. I was once pulled for doing 90 in a 70 limit in a van which could only do 60 downhill wiht a following wind. I wrote in with my evidence having measured and sent pictures and had a grudging letter from the police telling me they were 'under the circumstances' prepared to drop the case. No way Hose. The case was thrown out and I got costs, and a few who had been done on the smme stretch of road had their convictions quashed.
The trouble is people tend to just pay up. If we challenge them on the marginal ones they might just think twice as it will cost them more than they collect.
